New jeep owner here again. Having a blast with my Gladiator. Planning a DIY Woolwax this summer before the salt season, but I know that's not an option on the exhaust. Added mudflaps and nerf bars to help control the spray.

Just wondering what I might do for the exhaust. And sorry, "delete" is not an option;) Also not wanting to replace a new exhaust with stainless yet.

One option is just not worry about it. I have also, in the past, painted a RV generator exhaust with Eastwood Exhaust paint but not a car exhaust.

Any ideas? Thanks again!

At one time I thought of using wool wax or fluid film. But that stuff is super nasty.

I ended opting for 3M cavity wax inside the frame and in all closed or partially closed sections of the body or anywhere that was relatively protected.

Then did Amsoil HD Metal Protect on the outside of the frame and underside of the body.

Initially I did 3 coats of 3M cavity wax and 4 coats of Amsoil. Last fall I did another 2 coats of amsoil and routine touch up when the frame gets scratched.

Amsoil is self healing kinda, and dries like a wax so it is not icky like fluid film or wool wax. But it is not as good as those options if you are in the rust belt that will destroy a vehicle in 2 years.

As for the exhaust - not much you can really do about it. I got a lot of overspray on my exhaust but it will burn off since it gets so hot. The only thing you really could do is remove the bolts and put some anti-seise on the threads, bolt head, and shank. But thats not very feasible unless you really are that worried. I dont think exhaust leaks are all that common with these newer vehicles although there have been a few on this forum that had to replace a gasket inside a couple years.

^^^ Thanks for the detailed reply! I know the only real way to avoid salt is keep a car in the garage for the season, but that's why I traded my Vette for my Jeep. We have a 15 year old F150 that has been thru every winter. Just a very little body rust thru and a LOT under the truck. Even the engine compartment-- the dipstick was rusted in!

Just plan on doing a reasonable amount to try to save the Jeep from the same fate.

Four years, and no problems with the exhaust. I also use the under spray at the car wash.
It's a vehicle. Use it, enjoy it and when the time comes, replace it.

^^^ Good advice! I live out of town a ways, so by the time I get home from a car wash it's a mess again. However, I am lucky enough to have a heated garage and warm water access, so I can do an underbody spray in the driveway.

Sure thing! On my last car forum they wanted the other approach.

I am in the same boat (without a garage or heated water) which is why I went the route of the Amsoil metal protect. I really did not like all that I saw from wool wax and fluid film. to me it looks like it's just a sacrificial layer of goop not so much of a protectant - plus, that goop has to go somewhere, into my lawn streams etc. I have an hour drive home from town, so any car washing in town is completely pointless and a waste of money in my situation, and they wouldn't let me run the JT through anyway. This last winter we had enough above freezing days I was able to rinse the underside once a month or so at home. If I had what you have, I would rinse every time I got back from town, even if thats twice a week. Salt and brine is just nasty nasty stuff.
