You guys think that level of force would bend the frame?

Local law here……..Nothing is allowed in your receiver when driving.
Unless of course your towing a trailer.
Never heard of a ticket by anyone, not even those with the big pink balls hanging from the receivers.
Not a problem in the states - I think one or two states have laws that say nothing over 6" from the bumper but that's it. There was some discussion earlier and I got curious. No problem, as long as it's not waaay out there, and most states don't even specify that.

Should I be looking at the frame to check if it’s bent? Isn’t that where the hitch directs the force
Because the heavy parts of a vehicle have mass that tends to want to stay at rest (the laws of motion - things at rest want to stay at rest, things in motion want to stay in motion (without change in speed or direction)
That means anything heavy in the truck wants to stay still. I've seen engine mounts sheered and transmission cases cracked.
Granted, it takes some speed, but don't tell anyone "no harm done, no need for insurance etc." until you have looked things over under there.
Likely it's fine........ but......... assuming all is well and then later finding a sheered mount or something broken isn't fun, either.
I've looked at too many cars after accidents to even remember 'em all (worked in a place that did 24/7/365 towing) and have seen weird stuff.

There are specific parts or places of the frame to look at. Likely undamaged but it takes only a couple of minutes to check. There are "buckle points" that are made to give to absorb energy and save passengers. Doubtful but simply saying "no, it's not bent" - on the very unlikely chance that it is - should they pay or you assuming no, pay later?

I believe last time this came up, it was proven that leaving the hitch on in Canada is against the law is an urban legend. The only time it's a problem is if the hitch obscures the license plate. Being that I'm less than 100 miles from the Canadian border, I'd love to see someone cite an actual law that it's illegal.

Is it illegal to leave your trailer hitch in Alberta?
Hitches legally don't have to be removed from vehicles. ... Shoepp added the only time there is a law against the hitches is when it obscures a license plate. Under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, the fine for obstructing a license plate is $115.Aug 22, 2017

Found similar for Ontario but they added - if it's long enough you'd be required to have a flag then it's a problem. I didn't look up Ontario laws for requiring flags on long loads.

I looked up three provinces and all said it's ok unless it obstructs the plate.

UPDATED; ...So, I feel bad because I didn't even address your post, So, here is my correction; I'm super glad everyone is ok, it could have been alot worse, and it looks like your JT will be ok after some minor repairs. I hope your Christmas still went well and that no plans had to be drastically changed or cancelled. As for DOUGSTDIG; I've had the same receiver step since I've had my truck. I call it my Subaru Harpoon, but its an extra layer of insurance for the rear end, and they are solid. And as an extra measure for tailgaters, I used stainless steel bolts to secure a bright yellow pipe wrench to my bumper. That has seriously ended most idiots from tailgating me more than anything else. Honestly, I don't drive in town much, as I feel city driving is harder on my JT than an extreme jeep trail, that, and I'm always worried I'll pick up door dings or get plowed into,,,,,, or worse yet, I might get DUCKED, ha ha.

I hope that right corner of your tonneau cover is normally raised like that. I’m skeptical because my bedside bent really easily when I had a rear impact.

I also wondered but stuck to only suggesting it be checked over no matter what........
Body and bet mounts, everything should be checked against factory specs/measurements.
