I think you will find cars from the 50's or 60's with roll down back windows - maybe even earlier.
Mercury had a hardtop. With the roll down back window, and I think lincoln had it on a convertible.

Yes Ford definitely were the first power down rear window. It was available on full-sized Mercury's. My dad had a '64 Monterey with the Breezeway window. It was pretty gimmicky but was neat none the less. I have the retractable window on my 4Runner and we do use it. The dogs like to hang out in the back when the window is down. When I have to haul an odd 2x4 or ladder or something it is pretty handy. Won't have any of those issues with a Gladiator though.

Are you sure about that? Ford had an electric rear window on the explorer sport trac. Granted I haven't drove one in over 10 years but pretty sure it would fully recess.
I am not 100% sure and couldn't find any evidence online but I am not a patent lawyer so dont know how to dig for this stuff. That is what I was told by a close friend that works @ Ford. I know the specific window your talking about and that was much like Nissan's on the Titan where the center 60% or so of the window came down but the left and right are static. The patent that I am told Toyota has is for the Full rear Glass coming down.

I also use my 4Runner's rear glass open all the time, weather permitting and prior to my Gladiator purchase have used it to haul 2x4's, doors, even my Christmas Tree! It's was definitely one of the reasons I purchased the 4Runner over the Grand Cherokee, that along with reliability and larger interior space.
