I've wheeled in Moab on Class 4 trails without a hitch skid. I bumped the back a couple of times but suffered no damage.

You also need to be cognizant of your hitch getting hung up on an obstacle. Here's what I have.

It's a skid plate, wheel chock, recovery point, and a step. The bottom almost extends all the way to the spare tire (stock 33in. tire, btw) leaving little space for a rock to hang the Jeep up. I have beat the hell out of this thing and it's survived it all.
