So...what is the purpose for this shape of d-ring mount on a rear bumper? I'm curious about the large radius on the outside edge. Is there a reason for this or is it just a different design?
Thanks!

Looks like it’s meant to mount a d-ring on or be used as a traditional tow hook.

Would have been nice if they had rounded those inner edges more, so that you could connect a soft shackle to it. Heck, even a tow rope over that horn looks like it would get cut. From what I can see, with those sharp edges everywhere, your only option is to use that with a d-ring.

I thought of that, but the hook part sure wouldn't hold a standard tow strap. It may hold a metal snatch block?

No, only attach any thing to this through the hole only…no reason to get someone cut in half with a line slipping off that I’ll designed thing.

Who manufactured that bumper? Do they list out the rating for that attachment point?

The bumper is a Barricade. I'm sure they don't list any tested results for their recovery points.

Are those horns welded on the front only, or do those horns go through the bumper, and get welded/bolted to something meatier?

They go all the way through and are welded on the back side and are tied in with an extra frame bracket.

Weight ratings : really needs to come from the manufacturer, ideally as a numerical spec. Not sure if there’s a rep in this forum?

function : looks like d-ring is it. I see other forms that mention rounding the edges ( search for the manufacturer and soft shackle compliant ).

direction of pull : obviously straight ahead would be strongest, getting less desirable beyond something like 30°. In other words, if you attach both in a basket formation, use something long enough so that it forms an acute triangle towards the direction of pull.

In all honesty, I can't imagine ever needing to use those bumper recovery points. My first choice for a rear attachment point will always be my receiver shackle.
