I posted the pictures originally in the 'Engine Bay Fires' thread. I was quickly told that what I have is rodent damage. Friend and I went out to the Jeep, and took pictures and yup, it sure is. They even made a bed out of the rubber/foam sound deadener. Nice of them. I bought a Shop manual to identify what it was. It indeed looks like the fuel injector wiring harness. The only code I have a 'CHECK 4WD' which I don't think is related.

I have included two pics of the damage, and the items that I 'think' matches it from the shop manual. It is described as: 1 WIRING, Injector 68417572AA. I am interested in learning if the displayed damage is repairable without replacing the entire harness. I Jeep runs fine. This apparently happened while I was overseas for a couple months (Feb-Apr) and has been unnoticed until I changed the oil a couple weeks ago.
Thanks folks.

My $0.02. If it's working right now in the condition it is in, then splicing in wire to repair can't be any worse. However, I'd bite the bullet and spend the $$ to replace the complete harness. Looks to be less than $150.

I agree with whysoserious, replacing the harness will be quicker and save headaches.

I live in a semi-rural area and I gotta say, the only thing I hate worse than deer, are mice!!! Little buggers......

I would fix that in a heartbeat. That's no big deal. I have done 10 repairs in the last 24 months on 4 total vehicles. Harnesses are wound through the rest of the wiring/hoses/intake and are taped and zip tied. They are usually a pain in the ass to get out. I use heat shrink that has glue in it. Solder in a section of stranded of the same gauge and heat shrink the repair. Then use loom to cover it all and protect it a bit. The most luck I have had is using ultrasonic repellants. Some say they don't work, but I have not done a repair since they were installed under all the hoods. They will be in all my vehicles from now on. Like $25 for 2 on Amazon.

Damn, what a pain. Check out Tougher Than Tom rodent bags... they keep them out!!! I have a few in my engine bay, and in my Decked drawers. No more mouse poop, pee, or paw prints.

Why is this happening again?

This was a problem decades ago
when car wiring insulation
was made from rice husks
and other plant-based materials,
like soy and peanut oil.

The industry changed
to petroleum based wiring insulation
virtually eliminating the problem.
Why the change back to the old insulation?
Have vermin developed a taste
for polyvinyl chloride insulation?

By the way,
comprehensive auto insurance
may cover replacing the wiring.
