Hey guys a little back story and looking to see if anyone has noticed anything similar.

I now have a 2020 JT Rubicon and i have had 3 JKU Rubicons (07 auto, 12 manual, 2017 auto) and never had any issues with any of them rolling back when sitting on an incline after releasing the brake, even the 2012 manual since it had hills assist.

I live in the DC area and was in a parking garage yesterday that has a very steep exit like many of them do. So I am sitting there waiting up the tight spiral for about a minute and leave the vehicle in drive with my foot on the brake (electric stop shuts off the engine). When i go to drive forward and move my foot to the gas the JT instantly went back about 9 inches like it was in neutral, as soon as i was able to touch the gas though it went forward just fine.

I am just wondering if this is common because i just wasn't expecting it since none of my JKs would ever roll backwards in drive. Of course now I am using the handbrake coming out of garages just to be safe.

Any info would be great.

Is the hill start assist enabled?

It is but I will double check again the next time I am in the truck. I have had the touch screen lock up and crash before and maybe it messed with some of the settings.

man, I drove a manual for 7 years before I bought my auto gladiator a week and a half ago. I am finally getting used to not slamming my foot into the side of my door looking for a clutch pedal when stopping and automatically expecting the truck to roll backwards on inclines. Now I read this. Never thought an auto could roll back.

I am not sure how the hill assist works but my 2012 JK does not do that. I wonder if it has anything to do with the auto shutoff system. I know when I did my JT test drive when I ordered I turned it off. I personally just don't like it. Anyway the JT did everything my JK did including hill assist.

I don't think ESS is supposed to activate on an incline.

I wonder if the torque converter is programmed to not engage until the gas pedal is depressed, in order to save fuel...

It won't engage, I think the maximum is < 3% grade
This is interesting information. I felt it should be somewhere around here. I will have to test this on some areas near me since I am positive it has shut off several times in garages. But we know how the imagination goes where I "recall" it being a steep hill and then find out it is 2 degrees.
