Maybe it's so people can try Fast and Furious stunts.

Didn't realize that clip of driving backwards after a moving truck was actually possible with a stock vehicle!
For what it’s worth, I haven’t noticed it at all in the automatic. Is this fast reverse issue only a manual thing?

Been more than one time when recovering a stuck vehicle at the beach and dug myself down a bit in all 4 corners with a taught kinetic rope, that I could barely reverse enough to take the slack out of the strap, and that in 4L.

It feels like the engine is fighting a trans brake in that scenario.

My dad was a transmission mechanic for GM dealerships back in the day. I was helping him rebuild 350 turbos at the age of 13. Even on something like a 77 Nova, the reverse gear was the same gear/clutch-plate as 2nd gear forward. If your tranny was slipping bad into 2nd, reverse would slip too. If reverse was the opposite of 1st gear, I’m guessing that it would have too much torque ( with little weight over the back wheels ), making for some non favorable behaviors.

im sure some things have changed since then ( no more 3 on the column) and for a front wheel drive I would expect more parity between 1st & reverse.

No, it's there, it's just masked by the torque converter. But it's worse in a manual for sure.
Most I've seen are around 3.20:1
The automatic has a reverse of 3.30:1 which is a bit better
The JT manual isn't nearly as bad as most as it's only 4.49:1 which is between 1st and 2nd, and only a bit higher geared than 1st and a lot lower than 2nd gear.
So reverse in the automatic is a lot worse but it's masked by the torque converter slippage in reverse.
The manual is actually a lot better than the automatic and a whole lot better than transmissions before it.

GM THM350 has the low/reverse clutch pack and direct clutch packs engaged in reverse, not connected with 2nd gear
in manual 2nd, the intermediate clutch and forward clutch are engaged.

Being that the vehicle is "new to me" I was unaware of the HOLD feature and I do believe that this is the culprit. The explanations given match the issue exactly. Lesson learned!

I apologize and would have ended this thread earlier but I moved the day I posted and then spent the following 2 days without internet because no matter what the cable company says, it's not plug and pray. The lines really have to be live - who'd a guessed it. ?

What's the hold feature????

When I'm parked on an incline. And need to reverse uphill. I have no power to drive reverse as if the wheels are locked. What could this be? Sometimes it could even be a very slight driveway incline too.

I have a sport s with 4.10

I don't know why transmissions have such high gears in reverse.
I'm not sure why anyone on this thread hasn't figured it out yet. Maybe I just know all this cause I used to work in the film industry and know a couple stunt drivers, and I've been known to get into sketchy situations with my go pro, but...

It's so that you can hit at least 70mph in reverse while looking over your shoulder (or steering off your rear camera) for :

- insane gopro chase scenes (#1 reason)
- scaring the ever living $#@! out of your passengers when they get all cranky on you
- evading inner city gun toting maurauders - try that in a Rubi in 4 low!
- relieving the stress of long inter-state commutes at highway truck stops

I'm sure there are as many other reasons as there are sketchy drivers out there!!

But...if you have to compromise between high and low gearing, the obvious choice is high geared reverse for the abovementioned reasons.

As always though - YMMV.

Funny, I was going over this in my head before I went to the dealer but I must not have read the thread well enough because my issue seems very common and I do believe it to be geared too high. After reading the descriptions of others I seem to have the same - it feels like I am pushing the gas too hard and then it takes off on me. Hate reverse and as also mentioned, If I am going to back up to the garage (weak incline) I have to be extremely careful as to not gun it thru the door. I feel it is leaping in first too (automatic) so I will still have the dealer look. Warranty is coming to a close so I'll have them look at any/everything.

To start, I have an appointment with the dealer for a warranty defroster issue on Monday 3/4. Install new parts. They had worked on my ESS because that never worked and continues to not work after the fix but ....

I brought this issue up a long time ago because reverse never felt right. It is a Max Tow and has a brake controller which tells me it towed but what? As an experiment I drove in reverse up a small incline and the jeep struggles and requires gas until it lurches - high gearing? But if I take my foot off the gas the Jeep will roll down the driveway. Out of 4 other vehicles this is the only one that rolls forward when you stop giving it gas. Small, small, small incline. TX here is FLAT.
