So I’ve briefly seen the message before but it went away so quick I thought nothing of it. But today on my drive to work it popped up again, Service Shifter. It was maybe there 20 or so seconds, no idiot lights, no other bells or whistles chiming in either.

I’ve got 2022 JTR with 10200 miles on it, I bought it new from the dealer last October. Do I need to make an appointment for warranty service? Seems like a random feature imo.

I just don’t want to break or ruin something if I can help it.

This happened to me but it was extreme. Light came on and stayed on for the 5 minutes it took to exit off the highway. It then just revved and would not go into drive. Had to manually put it in neutral and push it off the exit ramp. It then went into drive. It was a mess. They now have it at the dealership but say it’s hard to pin this down.

Yeah that’s my problem, getting them to find it. Since my post, I haven’t seen the message again since I posted. I guess I’ll start posting things when my Jeep does weird stuff because the post seems to solve the problem for me! 😂 *knock on wood*

What’s work?
Ghosts like that are hard to troubleshoot honestly. With today’s multiplexed networks with bundled data steams occupying the same space a functional software glitch at one source is as relevant as an actual component failure. All it takes is one module to forget what it’s doing for a millisecond and chaos follows. Obviously if concerned take it in just don’t be surprised or frustrated when they come with the ole “unable to duplicate condition” because they may not be anything to see. As a technician I hate ghosts, I’d rather have a hard failure even if I don’t know root cause yet, a hard failure will let me source the root cause

I’m no longer working in auto, other than for myself. But I’m an IT technician now and it’s honestly the same when it comes to ghosts in the machines!

on my service shifter issue, all I found that they really do is check the software and check the shifter harness wiring. Apparently the harness wires come from the factory pinched or not firmly in position. Most electrical issues are usually difficult to pinpoint and solve.

It’s terrible anymore, heavy equipment and on highway truck(over the road) are just as bad as automotive, just layers of modules and I/Os for everything. I spend as much time being as an IT guy(which I am not) as I am a hands on tech. Hell it’s hard to know where to start or when I’m just chasing my own ass. I just in April got a new truck at work, a 2023 Freightliner M2 M106 it has 3200 miles and have had more bullshit phantom forward module and chassis module codes that just come and go, Freightliner was one of the first domestic manufacturers of anything to dive head long into the multiplexed universe long ago. Guess they still haven’t figured it out. The 2011 Kenworth T370 it replaced never had any issue ever. This is where I run into a wall with my dealer, the hacks there couldn’t even spell multiplex let alone troubleshoot it.
