The Dana 300 shouldn't have been that hard to shift unless it was worn out or the linkage was screwed up (using the just pull harder method will insure the linkage ends up screwed).

4x4 always sounds like a cool thing to have and most owners never use it, just yank on like you mean it and she let you slide in

Depends on where you live.
In this state (and the tiers above and parallel with us) it gets used every winter. 4x4s sell like crazy (and get driven like stupid in bad weather) Mountain states will see heavy use in snow times.
It's been used heavily in every car and trucks I've ever owned with that capability.
I used 4 wheel drive in my Eagles a lot in rainy times - very stable, great traction and safety in times before the days of traction control.

Not so sure I can agree with the "most owners never use it" part. Farmers, ranchers, construction companies - it gets used.
