The wife and I will be going camping at Luddington State Park in September (Labor Day weekend and a couple days into the week,) and we're thinking of taking the Jeep down to Silver Lake to go out into the dunes.

I'm not worried about getting aired down (Method bead grips and KO3s,) more looking for info on:
  • How busy should we expect it to be, especially if we go Tuesday or Wednesday?
  • Any suggested gear in case we get stuck, beyond traction boards, kinetic recovery rope, tow strap, various shackles (d-ring and soft)
Thanks!

If you haven't been there before, its pretty cool but its also crazy busy usually over Labor day weekend but most people are gone especially by Wednesday. There is a the annual BBQ event starting back again on the 5th and 6th, so there maybe some "leftovers" staying during the week or coming in mid week for the event

Don't know your front bumper set up, but you'll need to mount a flag tot he front of your Jeep. If you don't want to drill the 1/2" hole to through bolt the base of the flag, they have these clamp on tow hook flag mounts

You'll also need the 2 ORV stickers and realize that the dunes are pretty much a 1 way only "course".

The sand drag area is fun to watch or run your truck. The water holes are much deeper then they look, so I usually avoid them.

Follow the signs, have your head on a swivel for SXS's, dirt bikes, etc and you should have a good time.

Shovel, if you are alone. Usually people will come by and help.
Watch out for the back sides of the dunes. Take a couple trips around on the edges of the big hills slowing down after making it over. This way you can check out the backside of the bigger hills to know what you are getting into. Don't go in the water hole that isn't round. Sand conditions will change and influence tire pressure. 12 psi is a good baseline.
Back straight down. Don't try going further when stuck .

I was just there a few weeks ago for their Jeep Invasion. Like others have mentioned, air down to 10-12 psi, kill all traction control, avoid the water holes, follow the directional driving signs, and just be super alert of what's going on around you. Back straight down any hills you get stuck on. Make sure you have the proper ORV stickers and a flag mount for the front of the Jeep, flag has to be at least 10ft high, DNR will check for everything as you're driving in. They also check coolers, and no alcohol is allowed.
