Tom it is.

Man I'm looking forward to being back in a Jeep. I had a '12 JKU. Sold it to drop a car payment when I started my business. Bought a cheap but nice car for cash.

Then bought a Tesla later, which is kind of a hilarious trade to make on a Gladiator Mojave. Jeep people are better than Tesla people.

I got the 7 year unlimited miles warranty from Tom. I don't remember the cost but it was way less than 2 grand at the time. My factory warranty runs out soon at two years due to miles, so I gained 5 full years with that deal.

I opted for having an extended + windshield replacement after having one on my Taco. The JT has a 7 yr/100,000 for $1900 with a $100 deductible.

For anyone looking into this, I would make sure you can cash out of the extended warranty at anytime. Any reputable extended warranty you can. I still had 4 years on my Taco's extended and got about $1000 back when I sold it. You can often transfer them to a new owner for a minimal fee (should be ~$50 or less). Just be sure to keep maintenance records and supply receipts if you DIY-maintain for the transfer or claims. For the warranty to be valid you have to keep up basic maintenance.

For the non mechanical warranties, like the windshield and the paint/dent/ding ones make sure your local dealer can handle the repairs. That's where a larger dealer with other services is super nice. It's can be a PITA to go to a random shop to get these done otherwise. I've gotten a bait and switch from our lovely Gallatin Valley Subaru dealer in Bozeman on one of those, basically when it was time to use the coverage they shrugged their shoulders and said "we don't deal with them anymore".

If I have a problem with my JT after the factory warranty runs out I will just use part of the money I've saved on extended warranties over the years and buy a new one. :)

At the end of 7 years if I haven't needed my $1200 Mopar extended warranty, I'll be damn happy. There are also some extra benefits on the Mopar maxcare that are not part of the manufacturer's warranty.

This could be the 2022 model year sales pitch for Jeep :movember:
Haha, it is for me!

Seriously though, the Tesla is the best car in the world around town in my opinion.

It's not that quiet and doesn't ride that great, though, both of which are avoidable problems at the design and engineering levels.

It's also severely compromised on road trips. They're totally doable, but you have to drive certain routes, can't go absolutely everywhere at all and can't even conveniently go to a lot of others (no supercharger and you're in for a worse experience).

The build quality also isn't great, and getting them fixed is a hassle.

All of that said, I'm making $2,500 on the thing from my purchase price after 19 months and 22k miles so...it was a great purchase!

I’ve always been a proponent for factory warranties. I bought my 2020 JTR used last year and was able to buy the factory Max Care for it as a new vehicle. I checked with two local dealers for pricing. One didn’t/wouldn’t sell me Mopar and the other one quoted me $3600. A little internet surfing and I finally paid $1735 for 7/100 coverage.

Extended warranties are money makers for the dealers. What's the warranty cost? About $2500? Very few issues cost $2500 to fix.
One power distribution module plus labor is more than that at the dealer I went to.

OP, I went with Mechanical Breakdown Insurance with Geico. Only available when you buy new and within a certain mileage but it covers just about every non-wear/tear item (tires breaks fluids etc). It's about $10/mo so $120/yr or $1200 over 10 years.

I'll hit the mileage (120k miles I think) long before I hit the expiration date.

I won't get a Tesla until the Cybertruck for now. None of the models can make it to my in-laws and to the next charging station. And there are no charging stations within 100mi of my in-laws. I can probably make it to them, but I won't have enough juice to make it to the nearest charging station. 300mi range leaves me 100mi short of the nearest station, so I'd need the 500mi range of the Cybertruck.

Not that this matters yet, but you really need 70% of stated range to make it somewhere to trust it fully. You'll always get more than 70% of the stated range, but unless you're leaving home with 100% charge and heading straight to the destination you're not starting with 300, either.

I went on multiple 7 hour trips in it and it was fine, it's just a compromise. driving more than 3 hours can get dicey on whether or not you'll make it, and for me that's not worth it for most trips. 500 mile stated range is where I'll want it to be before I get tempted again.

I may not have been clear enough. Between Lexington KY (the last place with a charging station) and my in-laws is at least 150mi of winding mountain roads, with no charging stations in-between. So leaving with a full charge could get me to the destination, but I couldnt make it back. The nearest charging station to the destination is about an hour away, roughly 50mi through mountain roads and 170mi back to lexington. The only alternative adds 2h of driving time (not including charging time)

@ScooterKrunch , can you share the dealer who provided the $1735 quote? Was it Mopar MaxCare?
