Some Of Jeep's Best Customers Simply Can't Afford A Jeep Anymore

Deleted member 57233

I mean if you spend your life living in a low cost are where a house is $250k then you're likely going to have a salary to match, so things like cars are a significant chunk of income.
The median income for Idaho in 2020 was $28,757 individual and $58,915 for household. But somehow the roads are full of $80k+ trucks lol.

Those are visitors I bet.

That's my point. You live in Idaho and your HHI is $60k that's fine. House is $2-300k. No problem, beautiful area. But the world around you is going to be very expensive to engage with. A Wrangler is 100+% of your income.

We have the county on all the non-vanity plates here. They are local. And the median house price here is $450k, not $2-300k. Median is $575k in my city.

ok fine, I was thinking more like Kansas and Iowa when I was talking about 250k.

but still 60k income is rough for household living in 2023. My wife and I made that with menial jobs directly out of college back in like 2004. I remember because I got a job offer a little more than the 2 of us made combined which is why we moved back to CA.

And the Wrangler’s $32,000-$36,000 starting prices are still reasonable
Ah good, so it's not as bad as you make it seem.
but good luck finding one for that at the dealer.
Based on what? Why a dealer has x or y on the lot is a big ball of wax to unravel. It also doesn't mean you can't buy one.
Data from Cox Automotive shows the Wrangler’s average transaction price was $59,000 in September.
So people are choosing to pay more then? Almost as if the buyer is making the choice on what to spend?

Sounds like Jeep's best customers are the exact ones that are buying 2x the starting price. Not the ones not buying.

I know there is a point to be made on new vehicle prices and Jeep's approach. But this isn't it. Jalopnik is hot garbage.

Read the article and have to say, apart from the headline, it wasn't so bad.

Only the last paragraph where they compared the 392 with Mercedes G I would not agree.
In my opinion the 392 is the better offer for the money and would be even better if it is offered as a gladiator.

I (innocently) made a comment about how somebody could move to a place like Boise at a high level work meeting. I work in Software Development on the people management side for a company that deals with Financial institutions, so everybody I work with objectively makes a lot of money.

That comment was followed by about 30 minutes of conversation about how Boise is a fantastically popular destination to move to, and how you can't get into a house there for less than $500k

Then I got linked a dozen articles about how damned expensive it is.

lol... I'll never make the mistake of underestimating Boise again!

I hope the car strike and the insane entry costs stay where they are so when I sell mine it will have a great resale value! Supply demand.

It’s not as bad as what everyone said. You don’t have to live “in” Boise to find a decent place around Boise. I started looking at moving there after we decided Bozeman did not offer that ability.

Yeah, my house is 1400 sq ft, 3 bed 1 bath, built in 1940, on 1/6th of an acre lot. Worth just shy of a million. Housing went crazy here.

If you don't live "in" Boise, then you live in the suburbs, and our suburbs aren't that great compared to a lot of places. The traffic and commute times to all the fun stuff the area offers is kinda a nightmare since we haven't built out the infrastructure. Lots of 2 and 4 lane roads handling freeway amounts of traffic.

Agreed. It’s a lot like where we are now in greenville sc (road infrastructure) we stayed in Boise a week checking it out and driving around at different times etc.

Good thing is people want to move there. For me there were several opportunities.

I traded my loaded '22 Mojave this past April for 19% less than msrp (10% less than what I paid respectively). I owned it for 14 months and logged 7,000 miles. I thought that I did well at the time.

Now in October the trade value equates to 34% less than msrp (27% less than what I paid respectively).

The market has corrected itself and with discounts to 12K on new 2023's, the resale values are not in our favor.

If you start with the Max Tow package, you'll have the wider axles, the 4.10 gears and a rear locker
Not sure the "rear locker" is part of this package. At least not on mine.

…

So, if inflation is the reason for this, can somebody tell me why everybody else managed to avoid this "inflation" boogeyman?
Capitalism is your answer. Jeep figured out that Wrangler consumers WILL indeed pay that premium price on top of the inflated number. So they charge it. Simple as that…free market rules
