Thank y'all. It was a while ago, but I had an awesome time. It was an organized event with over 800 jeeps so there was plenty of advice. Still I learned a few things the hard way.
1. Air down to 8 pounds. They actually came around an spot checked. They did nto want people getting stuck.
2. Do not buy a cheap flag. mine was extra tall but is was limp. It bent over in the slightest breeze and even though it was 2 feet taller than required, it barely reached the sign where they check your flag.
3. Remove all the ducks from your dash. The dunes are really bumpy and you cannot go slow. I felt like I was inside a popcorn machine. Ducks were flaying all over the place and I had to wave my hands in front of me to keep flying ducks from blocking my view.
4. High gear only. I got stuck 3 times on the entry hill before I figured this out. I was never going to make it in low gear.
5. If you get stuck, just back down and try again. You need a lot of speed before you hit the hill or you will not make it up.
6. slow down at the peak. You do not want to go flying over the crest of the hill, you have no idea what is on the other side.
7. Going down, it is like driving in slushy snow. If you start to plow, turn into the skid, do nto try to correct back to straight or you may roll your jeep. Turn with the skid and straighten out gradually.
8, Going down slow down a lot before you get the very bottom. Otherwise you are going to bury your nose in the slope of the next hill.
9. Top up - windows closed. Unless you like sand inside your - - - everything.
10. You do not need to keep up with everyone else. Everyone goes at their own speed. You can go faster later as you get more comfortable.
11. Getting stuck is not really a concern (especially with 800 other jeeps around) the real risk is rolling over. That is mostly caused by trying to go slow downhill. But also do not go too fast downhill. Uphill you can go as fast as your suspension can handle the pumps. Downhill you need to find that magic just right speed. The slow way down at the bottom (but not using your brakes).
12. Take breaks. You will white knuckle grp your steering wheel at first and tense up thinking that you are gong to roll over. Take a break, relax, loosen up. It really is not as risky as it feels. Once you relax a bit - go some more. The bigger danger is ATVs and dirt bikes. They pay no attention to where they are going. Many are kids.
