This may sound strange but I prefer a spray in liner and a rubber bed mat. I had a spray in liner put in my old F250 and found it to be "slippery" for some cargo. I added a rubber mat and things stayed in place better. To each his/her own but for me this combination, while expensive, works best with the crap I lug around.

BULL HOCKEY - come and clean mine if you think they do. That's bunk. Get some gas or other stuff on them, they are stained forever. I've tried and tried - further, they are so course, you have to brush some things out while washing them.
I'd love to see someone come clean mine and make it look new again.
Maybe like the OP, I'm not as sensitive to stains on my truck bed liner...I had some stains in my Ram, but it never bothered me and have spilled lots of gas in my JT, nothing but usage staining...but I don't clean them either anymore than washing it like I would wash the truck. The only thing that really stained my Ram bed liner was rust. I let some metal sit too long and it stained the bed liner...I linex'd Metal Cloak fenders on my JK and they never stained.

There's an idea - I may go ahead and get a mat. This bed liner that was sprayed in is like 20 grit sand paper, nothing moves, even if you want it to, even dirt can't simply be swept out - and it stains badly. I should take pics of it - a painted box would look better than this.
I've had rubber mats - had a custom one in my Comanche and loved it. That or something that looks better than this dirty, stained bed liner.
I 100% agree - to each their own. It's your truck, you decide.

Go ahead and get a rubber mat, they need to do things with all those recycled tires - downside is it stinks like H E double hockey sticks for a few months....

I bought the Dee Zee heavyweight version of the mat, and am very pleased with how thick and heavy duty it is.

I've had much thinner mats in previous trucks that weren't nearly as nice as this one.

This is one I’m looking at too. Looks perfect.

Anyone have any thoughts about how to protect the tailgate? It gets a lot of sliding wear, and I’m concerned those “stick-on” carpet “bed rug” pieces won’t stay on the tailgate in the unrelenting extreme heat we get down here in the desert.

I have the DeeZee mat as well, it's awesome, perfect fit, just the right amount of cushion too.

I guess to the OPs question, I think it's done that way so YOU specifically can choose which way you'd prefer to go on your own, given the multitude of choices there are. My F150 came with a drop in plastic liner, I don't like those, so a lot of plastic and my $ got wasted when I pulled it out and put down a bed mat. Because even though Ford said it was complementary, I'm sure I paid for it somehow.

Actual mat in the JT. Perfect fit.

Is there an argument for a naked bed?
Yes, cost and flexibility. Just as the Deezee mat shows above, it's about a $100 solution. Line-X is about $500 and a renew is about $250. I'm currently weighing both options as I have a tonneau cover over a naked painted bed.

The $400 difference is not a big deal to me, so I'll probably go Line-X, but it might be for some people. Plus if you factor the (thread) aforementioned spills and stains, a Line-X renew at $250 is still roughly 2.5x just buying another mat.

LOVE the look of the mat (and accessories) in that red JT!

DirkG summarized well, also.

Man!! I am sure glad I waded through all of this, and I can still decide for myself what I want to do with my JT bed (naked or not naked). Geeze.....

I was considering doing this too. I'm going to add a bed mat toy wishlist. I'm hoping all gifts I get for my the next few birthdays and holidays are for the Jeep Truck!
