Your tires are tubeless. The bead must seat squarely in the rim bead area. An incorrect match will cause the tire to be "pinched", leading to the bead rolling out of the channel and over the rim. Take a turn too sharply while braking and enjoy the show. That is why aired down tires use rim locks. Also, pinching the tire causes the tread profile to bow upward/outward in the middle, leading to premature wear at the center.

yah. But the jeep shop was happy to oblige and said it’s done all the time. Now, please elaborate on the tire wear issue

These touch on it some. You begin to cause stresses in the tires when they’re pulled that way. As redrider also mentioned, they crown because the bead is being pulled in too far so you end up having to run lower pressures to get a more even wear. Worse gas mileage, handling, and you run the risk of blowing a bead when cornering.

I’m not trying to say something is definitely going to happen, but why risk a serious injury when there are tire sizes that are appropriate for the 7.5” rim? Again, manufacturers have rim width ranges for a reason. It’s not just made up BS for a proper look.

divide the metric measurement by 25.4 to get the inch equivalent. The second number after the slash is aspect ratio. /70 means the tire height is 70% of the tread width-taller than a /60. 315mm/25.4=12.4inches tread width. 70% of 315=220.5mm from bead to tread surface.
220.5mm/25.4=8.7inches. 8.7x2+rim diameter=17.4+17=34.4. 315/70-17 is roughly 35x9. Math geek. I see numbers everywhere.

I recommend 315 70 17 BFG KO2S, they made little difference drive wise when compared to the stock wheels. I got a Max Tow with 4.10 gears so take that into account as well. Here some pictures.

No lift or wheel spacers

35x9?? Either something got lost in your math or I am mis reading as a 315/70r17 is nearly 12.5 wide

The 315 (or 12.5”) is overall width. Tread width is usually around 10 I think. The 9 he’s referencing is the rounded measurement from outer rim to top of tread.

Could be.. But if so overall height-wheel size/2 would be a hell of a lot easier math to get there.

I prefer the Falken AT3W in 255-80-17 over the Rubi size Falken of 285-70-17. The 255s are 10.3 lb lighter, .3" taller, 10" wide instead of 11.2", better for snow and to clear suspension parts on turns.

Here’s your stock Gobi Gladiator w/max tow package on BFG KO2’s (285/70R17) mounted on OEM rims powder coated in satin black. The ride is smooth, no discernible loss in power/handling/braking. No lift kit, no spacers, no rubbing.

Overland wheels on the right Gladiator. What’s the lift, tire size on that one? I might do that with mine.

Firestone mt2 285/70r17 on a sport s max tow no lift. Debating on powder coating the wheels black. Definitely made the rims look much better!
