Surf/Beach Rig

Moving from UT to San Diego in 2 months - picking up surfing and want to outfit the Gladiator for the beach. Not beach driving, just being at the beach. I am needing a rack or bars for a surf board, a water tank & shower to rinse off, maybe an awning or something like that, place to hang a wet suit. I also want to be able to put a fly rod tube on the rack or bars for an 8wt rod to fish in the surf. Shit like that. Want to get creative - anyone have a similar setup that I can steal some ideas from?

Incognito is the way to go in the surf world. Your shortboard, lay it flat in the bed. Im thinking up to a 6'4 might fit on the diagonal.
You really want a vehicle you can sleep in like a van or a full size bed with topper.

Incognito is the way to go in the surf world. Your shortboard, lay it flat in the bed. Im thinking up to a 6'4 might fit on the diagonal.
You really want a vehicle you can sleep in like a van or a full size bed with topper.

That would be the dream but right now I'm starting out on at 7'10" for the first year or two - I have a roll up tonneau cover and am thinking something that fits in the t slots. The van would be the dream if I was a bachelor and cruising the coast but I'm going to be surfing dawn patrol 90% of the time.

7'10 is a great choice and I agree you will need a rack if traveling highway speeds or long distance. You are going to be headed to Baja a lot, lucky dog. Enjoy, it is the best life.

If i was going to get a van I would probably get a used Toyota Sienna or a new Nissan NV 200.

With the tonneau you could probably just slip it in the last segment with fins out

If you are just learning go to the kiddie break regardless of conditions every day for like 3 or 4 months. Don't bail your board and depend on your leash to save you. Hang on to your board at all cost. When you can get up on your feet and moving down the line reliably, branch out.
