Years ago I did an outdoor/gear/prepping channel on YT with my daughter. I didn't have a billion subs or anything but we had fun. I got discouraged because I really ran out of content to make videos for. There are folks with endless supplies of gear and gadgets to review from manufacturers and I just could not even come close to cranking out the content like they were. I ended up having a huge medical procedure and switched gears in my life and started working out, nobody wants to watch much of that unless you are just ripped. Again, just put it on the backburner.
I really want to start fresh and come at this with a new perspective. What I am wondering is it you guys had any advice that would help me throw all the things I like into a big mixing bowl and produce something other people would think was neat or at the very least watchable. I know I need to not look at it like a competition but I also am critical on myself not wanting to produce junk.
There are trails here locally but, man, they are more like ATV trails that people take beat up jeeps on, bottomless mud pits etc and I am not sure I want to drag my new truck through much of it. I've got tons of firearm videos I could do, 3D printing stuff, Jeep stuff, Prepping/survival stuff. I would love to do some overlanding and Ive got a cool idea with that.
Its alot of fun watching some of these guys go on these insane expeditions but I think I want to relate more to the average guy with a sense of adventure/family. Anyhow it is winter now so I have some time to get things planned out before summer is here and things pick up. Id love to hear any advice you guys would have.

I say do the content that makes you happy and a audience will find you.

Making content just for others is a double edge sword and I find a lot of the channels that do it, come off douchey an insincere.

I agree.
I'm more of a "come hang out for a few and check out this project I'm working on" approach.
But it's also nice to feel like folks are interested. I'll just have to put some work in and see where it goes.

Its a completely saturated market. I was doing professional development content on a by interview basis, and the problem was that I ran into so many poseurs in the field/social media that the message was getting drowned out. Here I was, a real SF sniper with over a decade of experience, having to prove myself and my methodology, because the InstaGunner wanna be’s claiming to be what they arent are more numerous, more public, and louder. It wasnt worth my effort or my time and i shut it all down along with my social media. Its just a time suck and a pit, and it personally worth it to me to try and “sell“ my time or expertise to people who really didnt know what they were buying in the first place. the issue also was the amount of time it takes. Its time consuming, which is why the “real deals” dont usually take off until they retire and transition to content creation as a full time job. If i told people what I knew about some of the BIGGEST names in “InstaGunning” with youtube channels, people would freak out. Almost every single major name trainer or gun reviewer claiming to be special ops actually never were. And i mean some *BIG* names.

everyone has a sponsored “overland” channel. If you have cash and time to burn, and live in a cool place, its easy to do some shorts on the side.

i guess in short, if you and the kids have fun doing it, then do it for that and enjoy. If you want it to be a business, then go all in. But if you want to do It for the publicity/popularity/people getting something out of it, imo thats not worth it.

Oh hell no. I'm not looking to get rich or become famous. It's just nice having an outlet for creativity. Maybe make a buck or two off some ads who knows. I'm actually moving off YT and onto other platforms that are less saturated.
The whole thing just becomes a sponsorship grind wheel. When I was doing say knife reviews if buy x knife, review it/mod it, etc. Get some attention but the other big names would get the knife sent weeks before release and have it passed around before any regular folks ever got the chance. Alot of it is rigged I agree.
And yeah the gun industry is right up there with the car industry. And I don't doubt anything you say is true.

then just do it as long as you and the kid are having fun. Especially if she likes that time with you.

I've got 3 girls now. They are hyped about the truck and they don't even know the doors/top come off yet. Lol
