There are tons of threads on towing, wheels and gears, but none that I see discussing the tow capacity results with 37s and changing the gears, I'm thinking 5.13. Probably a dumb question but how would this affect my towing capacity and how do I determine what my limit is, other than trail and error.

It really does not affect your towing capacity, but it does affect your towing ability. In other words, the capacity stays the same but the engine is gonna work a helluva lot harder to achieve your goals, speed etc. Your get up and go will be gone, gonna be mostly gone when put on the 37's but ask it to tow and you might be towing in 4th or 5th gear at best.

As always its the tale of the tape:
Jeep auto gear ratios:

Gear Ratios:
  • 1st - 4.71
  • 2nd - 3.13
  • 3rd - 2.10
  • 4th - 1.67
  • 5th - 1.28
  • 6th - 1.00
  • 7th - 0.84
  • 8th - 0.67

.67 Jeep auto final drive ratio

4.10/5.13 Jeep rear axle ratio

Tire height OEM 33 in/37 in

.67x4.10/33 = .083

.67x5.13/37 = .092

about a 10% improvement of the ability to tow

10% is not even on the order of magnitude of improvement chances are not likely to notice any significant difference, the 8 speed is still going to be chasing gears all the time and you will prob highway in 4th or 5th, about the same with the 4.10 cog w/37's

what about with a manual?
Going to be hard to hold top gears on the highway and if you are battling oncoming wind it is not fun.

That said the Jeep really does not care what gear it's in and you can go down to a gear that lets you drive at the speed you want (within reason) and chug away, mpg will not be what you want but if you chose 37 MPG is not on your side anymore.

Also taking off is going to be slow.

IMO I would run 37's without 4:88 gears. BUT if you like the look and mpg or accel is not a major concern then 4:10 will work...

Is this based on the weight of the 37s or the size of them? Or a combo of the two?

Looking at the Mastercraft course mxt 37s and they only weigh 70lbs and 36.69 tall

Just wondering a lighter package would be ok.
