Hey, all! So, earlier this year I had my 6MT transmission fixed for a fluid leak. A few weeks ago, I began getting a noise I could not locate, but assumed it was something in the suspension. After tweaking everything I finally was able to listen while my wife drove it slowly and it seems like the noise is coming from the transfer case area.

I inspected all the driveshaft boots and links and everything looks ok. But, I noticed my pinion angle (or whatever it's called coming out of the T-case and not at the differential side) seemed "steeper" than I remembered. I took a pic from the side, with the skid plate as a reference. Maybe this is nothing and I am imagining things, but my t-case looks like it's mounted so the front is higher than the rear, which is increasing these angles for both driveshafts... can anyone take a look at theirs and see if they have the same, or did my dealer re-mount something incorrectly when they did the transmission work? Maybe it's all in my head and this is the way it's supposed to be?

Thanks in advance for any help!

For reference, these pics were taken from the driver's side

Back inside now and comparing, yours appears to be more acute than mine.

I used a level app called Bubble and verified that the vehicle is sitting level.

Looking at them again and comparing the photos that are nearly the same perspectives, I don't think yours is much different than mine. It's probably at the stock angle.
Yeah, I think I'm grabbing at straws but d@mn if the angle doesn't look funky, especially the front driveshaft angle.

I measured mine earlier this morning, using the skid plate as reference and using the difference between the skid plate angle and the t-case angle at the flat spot to the rear but closest to the driver's side I got 87.3 degrees. Almost vertical, but visually it looks terrible!

Thanks again for taking the time to look at yours

What noise are you hearing? They replaced my tc as well and I am now getting vibrations and if I put it in 4hi around 35mph it vibrates really bad and I have the loud mechanical hum, like the chain is rubbing something. Wondering if angle is off as well. My caster from my Adams shaft and pinion is -9 degrees on the shaft with a 2 degree pinion. So, 7 degrees caster. Seems like quite a bit. I have adjustable upper control arms ordered to help out.

Mine's not a vibration, mine is a creaking/clicking coming from (as far as I can tell) the TC area, rear driveshaft. It's not a suspension noise: I can hop up and down on the tailgate all day and it doesn't make a sound, but driving slow, like turning into a parking spot, or my garage and the noise is apparent.

It's actually at the dealer now. As if the first noise wasn't bad enough, I was playing around the other day and shifted into 4H, turned the wheel to the right just a little and when I started moving about 1/2 a tire turn I got the loudest "pop" I've ever heard from the front drivetrain. It wasn't wheel hop or anything like you would get on dry pavement in 4WD: the wheel was barely turned. And I can repeat it over and over. I wonder if a tooth is missing from the differential... only happens when in 4WD.

I'll post back here when/if the dealer gets back to me.

Re-torque your axle nuts. IDK why JK, JL, and JT's only spec 100ftlb when they have larger hub ends than a YJ, TJ, XJ that require 175ftlb? Since I've seen so many with a pop while turning hard on dirt or slightly on pavment in 4wd, I've made it a habit to torque every one of them that comes in the shop requiring the front wheels to come off.

Could it be that simple.

Ok, that's one I had not heard! Just to be clear, you're talking about the "big" nut at the end of the axle spline at the hub? Do you torque to 175?

I’m (this very minute) having the exact same issue. I thought it might be the nuts on the ball joints as I found all over the forums as a common problem. I just tightened all four and then absolutely everything else I could find. Seemed to work for a lot of folks but not me.

It is definitely louder in reverse with steering wheel pinned to the right, but I do hear it in drive as well.

I just drove backwards and forward a million times trying to figure out exactly where it’s coming from and I do think now that’s it is coming from the tc area as well.

So now I’m sitting in the driver’s seat following this post. Hopefully we can figure this out!

I did not, however, tighten the axle nuts. ??‍♂

I did the ball joints, too, with no luck.

Hopefully the dealer gets back to me soon... they are having some "difficulty" answering the phone today (called 5 times over the course of 5 hours, finally left a voice mail...).

Yes, it's the axle nut at the hub, but the spec. is only 100ftlb. on JT/JL's.

The 175ftlb is for the smaller axle/brg on the YJ,TJ, XJ.....Those are never loose, but I've noted almost every JK, JL, JT is loose when I check them?

Interesting....

So, I just got back from the dealer because the service tech could not reproduce the noise(s). He told me the noise in front from 4WD was the TC and all the new ones "are noisy." I had a JL with basically the same and never heard the same noise.

Went for a test drive... he heard it and agreed it's not the TC for the front noise. He has no idea on the rear noise (which I think IS the TC and/or the rear drive shaft).

So, he's going to attach some "chassis sensors" to it and drive it around and send the results to Chrysler. Another day without my JT....
