Anyone that has had to regularly deal with people breaking into their cars knows that if you make it more secure, they will just do more damage getting in.

Sometimes the best solution is to leave nothing in there and leave it unlocked, hopefully they try to just open it before prying on stuff.
You must never use yours as a truck or daily driver to say that. How can you go to 2 or 3 different places, buy things, and leave nothing in the back? Tell the store to deliver it or ship it?
What if travelling like I'll be doing - rest area, gas station, restaurant stops, and take nothing with me.
Your "suggestion" is very impractical!
Gee, got this truck, guess I can't ever take it out and use it - someone might break into it.

Leaving it unlocked will only save the tonneau cover from damage - won't stop the theft.
Locking it will stop many "opportunists" who wander around looking for unsecured things in parking lots - not willing to take the time or make the noise of breaking into things, but very willing to simply flip up a tonneau and look and grab.

So what if they destroy the tonneau - it's covered by insurance - and insurance is going to ask "did you lock your vehicle?" in some cases.

Think it through -
If it's the "If I want it, I shall get it and nothing, no glass, no locked door will stop me" thief - there's not shit you can do. Insurance will cover the danged cover - geesh, why sweat a cover?
If it's the "I'll wander around here and see if there's some stupid people that leave things unlocked and look to get me some easy picken's from those fools who don't lock anything" - you'll stop them. They aren't pros, they are opportunists. They see a purse or wallet left on a counter or in a shopping cart, they'll grab it, but if you are holding it, they won't dare.

They way you put it - why even bother locking anything at all - they'll just bust the window to get in and rummage through the console and glove box if you lock it. Might as well leave it unlocked and save the glass damage!
The reason to lock it is to stop or at least discourage a good percentage of opportunistic thieves.
At least you can tell police and/or your insurance - yes, it was hidden, yes, it was locked.
Any police officer will say - hide it, lock it.
At least there's proof of a break-in and theft if there's damage done. My insurance will buy me a new cover, big deal.

Were did you find the latches?
Amazon - I have to cut the ends to make them how I wanted -
Top is how they come, bottom is where I cut off one part with a Dremel and a metal cutting wheel -

Does that use the preexisting hole at the top?
On one side, yes -
I tried to make them evenly placed on each side and as straight up and down as possible. I get sort of picky that way.

Rivnuts set back into the bed liner, shoulder of the rivnut against the metal of the bed.

Again, people that live in areas with lots of car break-ins know that making it more secure just leaves you with more vehicle damage, an insurance claim to deal with, and shitty cops that don't have time to deal with petty theft like vehicle break-ins.

Had a friend get his truck broken into and all his tools stolen. Dealt with the cops and insurance for a month, got everything replaced after the hassle of receipts and proof, minus the deductable of course. A week later it happened again with more damage to his truck, probably because the same thieves new he would get all new stuff through insurance. Now he takes his tools inside every night and leaves it unlocked lol.

I'm not even in a big city anymore and all the idiots with the 2A stickers on their trucks are always getting their windows smashed because there's a chance they left a free gun inside.

Just returned from a thousand mile trip where we used the rain gear cover at nighttime and had no top on the Jeep when we parked for the Labor Day bridge Walk. Often we launch our boat for the day in a Jeep without doors. Same with shopping.
We live in different parts of the same country.
