I have heard that also. Latest maps are pretty much a year or more out of date. Have also heard any update USB for the 8.4 radio itself is usually not the latest software rev for most. So it is gamble to order the NAV map update thinking one will get the latest 8.4 radio software update.

When you order the map update, they have you check and report the software version on the head unit. I bought in July 2019 and did a map update in August 2021. It included the latest version of the software for the head unit, which had to be installed before the Map update. There was a note in there, somewhere, about how the Map updates are only done for the latest version, and the head unit has to be updated to match. There was also a warning about doing the software update before the Map update or it might brick the head unit.
