So I'm curious as to what voltage the gauge shows when ESS is engaged. Is it showing the main battery, the aux battery or a combination of the two? When running the gauge shows roughly 14 volts but when stopped with ESS the voltage drops to 12.2 volts or so. What does that 12.2 volts represent?

~12.6 volts just represents the standard/typical voltage of a battery not being actively charged by the alternator. It's measuring the main cranking battery.

That's what I thought but was hoping it was monitoring the AUX battery while in ESS mode for obvious reasons.

The two batteries are in parallel, so it is measuring the average of the two.

12.2 VDC would be a 50% state of charge of a battery with no load but since it is at stop with a vehicle still engerized that is about what I would expect.
