I have a '21 Ecodiesel that recently developed a soft brake pedal. It doesn't go all the way to the floor, but it's farther than you like and a pump will make it feel nice and firm. I've added fluid twice, although that may be from pad wear.

After the brake issue started, I used Jscan to change tire size since I'd swapped out my wheels. Didn't do anything else with it.

I had it at the dealer for other reasons and they looked at the brake pedal. They were able to duplicate the problem, but said that since the 12+8 cables had been removed (I still had the bypass cable in, which I should have removed but forgot too.) and the truck wasn't able to get all the info from certain sensors, it would cause a soft brake pedal. They're saying it uses sensors to auto adjust what the pedal feels like, and since it didn't have data it resulted in a soft pedal. I told them that the soft pedal developed way before I ever had the bypass cable in, but for whatever reason he keeps repeating they think that's the issue. I told him again the soft pedal pre-dates the cable and he still didn't indicate that he cared or had other ideas. Not super impressed with the dealer.

Has anyone ran into this? Any ideas? For the heck of it I did put the cables back in factory configuration.

The bypass cable should only be connected when changes need to be made.

ZAutomotive (Tazer) sells an extension cable that makes using the bypass cable real easy.

You posted you put it back stock.. now disconnect the battery cables; about 10-15 minutes, re start and drive. If the brakes are still soft, visit a different dealership and know nothing.. You are correct on pad wear if you are adding brake fluid; you might want to check the pads.

It's not a brake by wire system, so the 12+8 cable connected shouldn't be an issues. Sounds like you have air in the system. Have you try to bleed it? Recent brake job?

Edit... I don't recommend topping off fluid level due to pad wears. Sometimes it does more harm than good. Incompatible fluid, contaminate and/or moisture and must have it removed when replacing pads. Manufacturers designed the reservoir min/max levels to compensate for that. The more pistons, the higher fluid capacity between min/max levels.
