Engine. He was reasonably calm actually. From engine or driver?
Below the wall. That's on the bypass right? If so that is indeed super steep.
That pic from behind shows the "how/why" it happened, thanks for sharing!More pictures of the recovery. Unless you've been to Poughkeepsie Gulch, it's hard to get a feel for the incline. We were the last ones in the area for the day 230p-3pm, he had professional recovery help coming, but hours away, so he was lucky we were there to assist with some daylight left. @WILDHOBO was the rear anchor, and @darksidedesign on the front. The bronco owner had his winch set to my tow strap used as a tree strap anchor 30' up the hill to pull him upright, while everyone else kept things tight with their winches. Without the rear anchor, he would have rolled forward without control.

Wow, you were absolutely ready for a full rebuild!Well. The planned bearing, seal, and shim replacements for the front diff today didn’t go as planned. Even though the ring gear looked perfectly fine, when I pulled the assembly I found the pinion had catastrophically failed.
A local shop had revolution 5.13’s in stock, so picked them up. So far the old is out, bearings have been pulled from the old carrier/locker, and new bearings are pressed onto the pinion and carrier. My vise wouldn’t hold the diff enough to get the ring gear bolts to 150. So they’re going to get torqued in the housing.
The project continues tomorrow. Oh well. The guy I’m paying to help and teach me is being super patient.

That’s because the other hand is only thinking about where all the money in my pocket went…I will say that Snap On feels great in the hand.

I bought a clamshell one from revolution. It worked like a champ.Wow, you were absolutely ready for a full rebuild!
Toast.
Have you ever used one of these?
Carrier bearing puller - a variety of inserts to fit around different carriers and diameters of bearings.

I've broke craftsman sockets ratchets and extensionsOnly broke one Craftsman tool. A new 3/8" drive ratchet back around 1994. Stripped it when working on disk brakes.
Took it back to Sears and they tried to replace it with a beat up rebuilt one until I pitched a fit and made sure to point out the condition of the one that had been broken. I left the store with a brand new 3/8" ratchet....
Did you take a look at the pattern before you pulled it? I'm just curious how deep that pinion was .. especially where there is no damage to the ring. I'm by no means a R&P expert only set up a few toy diffs, however I do like to find out why things happenWell. We didn’t. Neither of us even thought this was going to be more than a bearing/seal replacement until it was out.Did you take a look at the pattern before you pulled it?
