I had a similar noise. Turned out one of the front axle u-joint clips had popped off. The u-joing bearing cup backed out and the end of the axle would clunk as it rotated.
I caught it before the cup and bearings disappeared. A local driveline shop gave me a retaining clip and I replaced it. No problems since.
