Will a 17x8.5 and 17x9 inch wheel with the same offset make the tires stick out any different?
also does anyone have pictures they wouldn’t mind posting of there 17x8.5 -12 wheels? I can’t seem to find much.

Same back space, 1/2" difference in width, poke would be 1/4" more on the 9" wheel.

Not enough difference that you'd see it.

A wider rim will allow a tire to run wider as well, so you'll gain more poke than just the rim difference.

How about which one will have more dish im guessing the 17x9 -12 will visually have a deeper look than the 0 offset 8.5 thanks for your help!

8.5 with -12 offset = 4.25" BS
9.5 with -12 offset = 4.5" BS

Ok. What determines the dish/lip of the wheel?? Offset? Or backspacing? I’m ordering wheels and don’t want this certain wheel to be to flat

Both. on a jeep, functionally, we really only need to know the backspacing (and make sure the wheel is wide enough for the tire you intend to run).
Offset without knowing wheel width is useless for calculating backspacing.
Back spacing is not affected by wheel width.
Backspacing is affected by offset. If you are looking for poke, the wider wheel with the same offset will have a deeper dish to the outside AND the inside.
