One thing to be aware of when saving receipts: if the receipt comes from a thermal printer then the information will disappear in a relatively short time - the thermal paper tends to turn a uniform grey color as it sits around. I make a copy of all thermal receipts and save the copy.

Been down that road with disappearing faxes when thermal faxing was a thing. Lots of stores still using thermal in the receipt printers, good advice for sure.

I use to be bad about getting a receipt and tossing it in the glove box or just putting it in with the owners manual, until I had to eat a battery over a ghostly receipt. I print them and put them in a vehicle folder now =)

I wonder if the dealer would accept the maintenance logs from Carfax. Aside from resale, what is the advantage of using Carfax over the Mopar logs?
None. Carfax likes to be official, but frankly, logging in your mopar site is just as good, and it will include dealer repairs and warranty work with your oil changes.

Carfax is not automatic.

Has anybody confirm if Mopar maintenance logging shows up on Carfax? Good to know for resale.
How will that improve resale? All you have to do is show your logs of maintenance. Even a book is just as good. Carfax isn't the god of resale values. It's been proven more does not show up there than shows up. It's voluntary. You may buy a car that looks clean in carfax but has had major repairs.

You determine resale value in your negotiations with any buyer - not carfax. Proof is proof.
If I were selling something and a buyer insisted carfax was the god in the price and insisted that since it wasn't in carfax, it never happened, I'd show 'em the door. Show me your logs or receipts. That's all I care about.

Get yourself one of those receipt scanners seen on TV, or at walmart, whatever. Or, simply throw them on your do-it-all scanner, printer, copy machine, coffee maker, microwave, tv, phone, computer, mp3 player thing and scan them to file/pdf.

The auctions all integrate with them, and the data shows up in the condition report of the listings. All vehicles have an automatic Carfax where books and records may not be available or lost. Anything good in Carfax is a definite positive in a resale sense. Also most customers today pull a Carfax prior to even coming out to see the vehicle. Records included in Carfax would be a positive.

Auctions mostly do, yes, but auctions are just one way vehicles sell or get bought.
Although it's possible "all vehicles have an automatic carfax", that doesn't mean anything has been reported.

Reports are voluntary. In an accident? No guarantee that the police or insurance company reports it or that carfax is tied in to get that info.

I sold a Jeep a year ago - I looked the Jeep up thinking I'd find info to help support my asking price - and found nothing about it other than ownership - when and where it had been bought. Not the new rocker panels, radiator replacement and so on. There was nothing but ownership records for it.

I have on hand over 6 links showing just how bad things are. There's nothing automatic about car fax. I've posted some of this info before - but here's some of it again...........

Check out this state consumer organization investigation -

It will show AVAILABLE information............ think of that. Since there is no law, there are no requirements for anything to be reported, and it's been shown most private body shops do NOT report to carfax........ hmmmnm. Nothing says anyone has to report anything. It's what is sent to them, accurate or not (how bad was that accident, honestly - maybe it's not as bad as the guy typed it in). It's not automatic, and in fact, some of the research involved online vehicle auctions - and the facts didn't match the vehicle being sold online.

And they go on to outline how not everyone, not every shop, not every agency, reports things.

It's a place to start, but isn't the end-all and shouldn't be relied on completely. (regardless of what dealers and fancy animated foxes on TV tell you)

Naw, I'll keep my records and any buyer who insists that if it's not in carfax then the oil was never changed may get handed copies of all of stuff I've found from Consumer Reports and others. I won't mess with such a buyer. It's not worth it.

But I guess carfax marketing has apparently won - no matter what real research says.

I never said Carfax is the 'god' of all maint records, it's just that most buys/sells depends on what's on Carfax. As far maintenance, I always keep my own records in folders, of each car/truck, whether it's for maintenance, smog, or upgrades. Believe it, in most cases when someone comes by interested in buying, when they see my folder, it's a done deal. It is ALWAYS best to keep your own records.

Now, about Mopar maint, my hope is these dealer performed maintenance WILL show up on Carfax anyway, unless proven wrong. That just enhances future sale, records are records there, after all.

I don't disagree, I couldn't even begin to tell you the inconsistencies we've come across over the years. In fact the car I traded for the Gladiator was a repossession I bought at the auction that showed 6 accidents, but what it really had was 6 panels vandalized by the previous owner. Which I had to explain to the dealer before they gave me that amazing trade value.

But fact is that it was integrated and consumers love it as a tool. Just like all that old will soon be NFT, ledger or blockchain based whether people love it or not.

It is in the app also. If you log into the My Jeep ad, go on the bottom to "maintenance", and there will be a button that says "add a maintenance record". Fill out the fields there. DIsclaimer I still haven't used up all my Jeep Wave so I haven't needed to use this yet, but I noted where it was for when I start.

Dealer service is recorded there as well.

At the bottom is an add record button where you can log your own maintenance.

My dealership give me a printed (like you'd get from a regular printer) receipt which I keep in the owner's manual pouch.

Once I find out where I can dispose of used motor oil, I'll start doing my own oil changes. Keep the receipts (photocopy if thermal paper) and write on a blank page in the owners manual date, mileage, and what was used (filter type and brand of oil) to perform the maintenance.

Did this for all my other vehicles. When sold or traded in, I'd show the buyer (or salesman) the owners manual and they were impressed. For a buyer, they knew they were getting a well maintained vehicle. Salesmen...did it get me a better trade value? Dunno but, probably didn't hurt.

That sort of thing got me well over book when I got the insurance check for the WJ I totaled, and that my wife to this day will not let me forget that she launched it into a really super deep ravine, missing a lamp pole, stop sign and a no passing zone on the other side of the T intersection and I was able to drive it out for her (took some doing, but I got it out) I think the drop was something like 20 feet......... then 1 week later, I wrap it around a post.

Anyway, that's a great example. Doesn't have to be fancy, even digital, just well organized and complete, even with some detail where helpful. Good one.
