Finally got around to doing the first oil change. I had every intention of doing it at 5k but life happens. At 5,533 miles the computer had it at 12% oil life left.

Also did a tire rotation. Not loving the 5 tire rotation compared to my Wranglers but it is what it is.

Finally, it was over 2 months since the last bath so I cleaned it up.

Not that anyone will ever need to know this but a Dana 1310 for a JK will work on a JT. Also, how sad are my winter tires 🤷‍♂️

Softopper comes in a much smaller box than I was anticipating…

Well, my wife decided to book an OBX vacation today for one week from now so it was an unexpected work on the jeep day.

With just my wife and 2 kids the bed is usually packed full under the tonneau cover but our rental is pet friendly so our Golden is coming along.

This forced my hand to install my Softopper which “should” give me ample cargo space. Also, had to throw the kayak rack on, change the oil, and rotate the tires.

The DIY rack is finally done. I’ve been putting some miles on with the kayak up top to ensure everything holds up. I think it’s going to serve its purpose well. Though aesthetically, the rack would look better if it was lower, being at cab height will also allow me to carry a SUP or anything else of the like.

With the removal of the 4 bolts on the bed rails, I can easily remove the rack by myself. Also, the DIY bed sliders are incredibly handy for accessing the rack to strap things down. Finally, the trifold tonneau cover can still function just as it would if there was no rack.

Hey RCKLNDR, I am looking for more pictures of your DIY Rack. I just ordered a bed cover but also need a rack for two 12 foot kayaks. Can you share some more pictures of the components that connect to the bed rails, how they fold around the truck bed, and I'm just curious what metal and where you picked it up from. I am very handy but don't want to recreate the wheel if you already have it mastered.

Are you saying a factory JK front driveshaft will bolt on to a JL/JT? That might eliminate the issue at the transfer case with the factory shaft and front drivers droop..

They are just some random pieces of 3/16” steel with a 90 degree bend. I picked them up at Ace hardware. I’m not sure what they were actually for. They’re tied into some unistrut under the bed rails. If I was to do it again, I’d shoot for 1/4”.

I feel like they’re probably similar in diameter so there might not be much of a clearance improvement at the crossmember.

It's not really crossmember clearance until you are at 30+ inches of front shock extension. It's the transfer case end of the factory JL/JT stock driveshaft. At 28.5" of droop the collar on the factory driveshaft gets hit and deforms.

Ah, I gotcha now. Does that deformation lead to premature failure like the boot tears did on the JK?

exactly. it lets the magic smoke out. factory JK fronts use an rzeppa correct? Not a double cardan.

Yeah, when all the grease is gone and you put it in 4WD, they make a lovely grinding noise. Thought it was the tcsse at first.

Thank you for this. Did you weld the exterior vertical bar to the 90 degree angle steel piece or bolt it on? I see in your pic the 90 degree piece is on but the rack looks to be removed. My plan is to haul two 70 pound kayaks up there but I will only need them every so often when I need the bed as well as the kayaks also easily fit in the bed when the cover is rolled up.
