https://www.seamar.com/item/SAM872-BL-SZ/AMSTEEL-BLUE-ROPE/

Seattle Marine tends to have both the best AND most consistent pricing and they sell down to the foot.

Also if you roll your own you lose that degree of certification which is why you over size, at least in my mind. To me the fiber it more important, there are many dyneema and many SK flavors but only AmSteel Blue is AmSteel Blue, even if you get another color. These dirt cheap winch lines from Earths Giant Lung may claim all kinda of WLL and break strength numbers and they may be true or they may be for the ideal rope which is not the one in the box. Next time around I'm going all ASB from the start to take that variable out

Yeah I would definitely stick with amsteel blue.

What's the concern with testing? Are you worried about imitation amsteel or just not setting the stopper knot correctly?

I have made lots of these out of smaller sizes and have never had them break but then again I've never pulled a truck with it either.

Thanks for all the advice!

Well I don't have an issue per se, mostly I'm just pulling my own truck and what not so it's on me one way or the other.

As for upsizing, if 7/16 works by the math, doesn't hurt to go up to 1/2" just to be extra sure, allows more fur on your work. A few cycles will dress the stopper right down and a good hard test pull will prove your work one way or the other.

Also, larger rope is easier to work with and handle in the field, say with gloves on.

I'm all for removing as much of the metal from the line of recovery. Chain gives me the willies anywhere other than industrial application. I've seen guys with glorified garden chain spooled on their hooks and can't think of a reason you'd ever need that. I have some class 120 chain for serious tugging and I would swap it in a moment for an amsteel whoopie sling.

Update:

I went with the 1/2". This is what 7ft will get you.

I think the smaller one is 7/64" for reference.

The knot is only hand tight right now (well I hung my weight on it) but solid. I will have to find something to pull to get it fully set.
