I'll not name names but a dealer in our area sponsors an off road event regularly at a local off road park where they pay for your access to the park and promise an intro to off-roading experience with a seasoned veteran as your guide.
Be as me nor my wife have ever done anything off-road and her Jeep is our first ever Jeep, this seemed like a perfect opportunity to learn the ropes. As the event starts in the morning, they let you know that you will get the usual stripes from rubbing against brush but they state that they will be taking it easy the first part of the day and will make sure you don't get into a situation where you're going to get body damage. They explain that after lunch, they will take it up a notch and if you choose, they will take you through much more advanced obstacles.
They divided us up in groups of 4-6 Jeeps with each group being led by our veteran guide. Suffice it to say, it was very shortly after heading off that I realized we weren't getting the "easy" 101 exposure to off roading that was promised. I realized once it was too late that we were way over our heads not only in experience but in terrain that my wife's Gladiator could navigate in it's current state.
The lesson learned was that once you sign the waivers, all bets are off and no one can care as much about your Jeep as you do. I'm in the process of getting quotes for the repairs from our "easy" 101 off road experience and I can say that we will never blindly place our trust in someone to "guide us" in an off road experience. If I had it to do all over again, I would have paid my own way in the off road park and chosen my own trails to take and we wouldn't be making repairs the first time out with a new Jeep.
