Well I pulled the trigger and dissected my hood to complete my Mopar CAI. Been gathering the courage to cut into a $56k Jeep and not f#>k it up. Was considering the rugged ridge intake pipe set up that had the cowl vent replacement. Just seemed it was a lot of distance for the 3.6L to have to pull air. I like how the Mopar design has no restrictions. With the vent being located at the mouth of the air box. Install was fine, lots of tape, measure twice, and have a good dremel with all the fixings!! As I will testify “ it’s not for the faint of heart “ but if I can do it anyone can. I can unpucker now it’s installed ?.

Looks like you did a great job. Is there risk of filling the entire box with water? Or water from melted snow? Days like these would make me wonder. I understand that the water stays under the filter, but with a really heavy rain, would it empty out the bottom of the box fast enough to not end up in the throttle body when it’s running? I’m not hating. I’m genuinely interested in the path from above. Is water deflected inside the hood somehow?

Second to the last photo shows the removable block off plate that is included. It closes the intake off and allows the intake to function as factory and draw from the fender. The stock bottom of your air box remains if you install a Mopar CAI, which has drain holes in it, 4 I believe. So you are only replacing the upper half and filter. Charge pipe is different from stock, also included are both boots with clamps and an installed MAF sensor. Of course the cutout assembly. I had a Scat Pack Challenger with the heat extractor hood never had an issue snow, rain, ect with anything in the engine bay. Like the instructions state Use common sense.

That rugged ridge setup has that flat tube that connects everything in two pieces looks to me to be quite restrictive. Like sucking air through a straw. A snorkel is a completely different set up for a different purpose. Didn’t post to argue what is best. For me the Mopar set up is the least restrictive, after all it’s factory replacement part.

Thanks. That definitely covers it. Sounds well designed.

Not knocking the kit you have at all. I have the RR version. Difference in pre to post install performance change was non existent. There is more intake sound if anything. I run the low profile and high top, depending on time of year. I will say this past year Im glad I had the high top on, water was flowing over the hood at a deep crossing. Cowl area was clear but close though, I did have the high top on.

I like the look with your cut into the hood, but man I could not do that.

As for snow, rain getting in, low or high I have had no issues or signs of significant water traces in the air box. All other factory openings with the RR kit are closed off.

A snorkel is a completely different set up for a different purpose.
I do not agree with that statement and also do not argue what is best.
If you look at reputable expedition rated snorkel manufacturers, you quickly understand that there is no sucking of air, but actual airflow tests that ensure normally that airflow exceeds what the engine will get in its unmodified setup. Also, it is more about cleaner air.

The RR is not waterproof btw, so water crossings I would only attempt if I additionally sealed it up myself, and I am not sure if they have done any tests to their airflow.

So I wish Mopar would make one of these, or any intakes for that matter, for the diesel engines.
