Howdy All,

I am NOT into hardcore over landing, I would like to occasionally use the Glady to do a some short camping trips overnight usually, three days at most. I have been looking at simple truck tents and came across this setup, watched the videos and thought that for my intended use this combination would work well. The air mattress looks a bit extreme but if it would keep the wife unit from complaining it would be well worth the price.

Click the link, If anyone uses this setup, please comment on it good or bad. If you have this particular truck tent, will it work when you have a tri-fold bed cover, I am thinking that it should work with the cover if you don't fold the cover all the way up, so any information regaurding it's use with a tri-fold bed cover will be most appreciated, Thanks.

I have considered this sorta thing in the past. It honestly to me seems more work than its worth. Because you have to empty the bed of whatever you have before setting it up and then putting stuff back in the bed. It is a neat idea though.

Have you seen/considered the canopy tents that some companies have? I realize you have a tonneau, but if your considering a canopy in the future that might be a better option? Seems to be a little less of a hassle than the bed tent idea IMO.

I have one and it works in a pinch you don't have to empty the bed to set it up you will have to make room on the inside of the bed but that's just to make sure it is lined up right. If you do get one just keep in mind that if you are taller then 5'8" and you get a thick air mattress you will lose interior space aka leg room if you lay down straight. I use a kingdom cot and i have to put it at a 45 degree angle and my feet still touch the door of the tent.

Howdy chorky,

The thing that attracted my attention to this particular truck tent is that you DO NOT have to take stuff out of the bed and then put it back in to use this truck tent. If I were interested in long time use I would be looking at better options, I am thinking of occasional use and EASE of raising and stowing the darn thing.

Howdy Dillard,

I am 5' 11' but I sleep on my side with my legs bent so probably need more like 5' 5-6" of actual lenght to be comfortable. There are times when my 5'2" wife will be along so the lenght of the tent/mattress won't be a problem for her. How do you like the over all quality of the tent, is there anything in particular you don't like about it, how does it seal where the tailgate and the sides of the box meet, I watched one video that showed a large open space in that area but it was on a truck that was built different then the Gladiator is in that area.

there is defiantly a gap around the sides of the tail gate but i think it just helps with ventilation. they are build nicely I've used it in late fall and it was pretty cold out and it was able to hold in the heat. the only thing i would change is making it taller so you can stand up in it. over all id say its worth it if your using it for a night or at most 2, if your setting up a camp site then exploring the area then heading back to the site id say bring a ground tent or if your on a off-roading trip for a week in the middle of nowhere id still say bring a ground tent.

I've had this one for a while and it works well enough. I didn't have a bed cover before but now have the Bak XPS roll up one. The tent does have an interior bed liner so you really do need to empty out the bed since that's where you're sleeping.

Pretty happy with this setup. Softopper, JCR Overland Rack, Rightline Gear SUV tent, Airbedz air mattress. Takes a little longer to set up than a rooftop tent, usually about 20 minutes to set it all up but don’t have the weight of rooftop tent, and not affected by wind under the softopper. Lots of choices out there.

Howdy All,

Figured as I started this thread I should update it. I bought the tent and air mattress I posted a link too, first time setting up the tent I had a hell of a time, second time it was easy. Air mattress is comfortable, do wish it was not as tall. For someone younger the tall air mattress probably isn't a problem for my gimped up 74 year arse it's a bit of a climb. All said and done, I am happy with the tent and air mattress, the other half who hasn't yet made the climb will I am sure give me her opinion when she gets up and onto the mattress for the first time.

The rightline gear tent is nice. It is pretty easy to set up after practicing it once or twice in the driveway before heading to camp to use it for the first time. The AirBedz is also very nice. It covers the fenders and full bed width with a pad and the extra extension for the bed is also great.
HERE IS THE BIG ISSUE: The AirBedz is not designed for that tent. It makes a nice shelf to catch rain. Your feet, mattress extension, and any associated bedding will be soaked. Rightline Gear makes their own mattress that is not nearly as thick and does not extend all the way to then end of the bed. Their mattress work perfectly with the tent but does not cover the fender wells and does not fill up the entire width of the bed. https://www.quadratec.com/p/rightli...ttress-gladiator-jt-mid-sized-trucks-5-6-beds

Just got this today and set it up in my driveway in 11 minutes just taking my time. I did watch some YouTube videos beforehand, but it’s really easy and I believe I can do it a lot faster with practice. I think the fit is very good and I’m happy with the quality. Can’t wait to use it in the wild. I have an Exped mattress that fits perfectly between the wheel wells.
