I got my regear done. It had a whine. Long story short the bearing in the rear had two nicks in it so all is good now. Just took it off-road today and after about 30 minutes of nothing abnormal I started hearing a metal on metal rattle/clanking noise coming from the back I’m assuming. Is there anything I can check? I crawled under and felt nothing loose to the touch but would like to know what to go over. There is nothing worse than a rattly jeep off-road. It only has 16k on the odometer.

also a second question. In 4 low is it normal when going slow And turning the wheel back and forth to hear small popping/ creeking sounds? Like when articulating? I feel like I have a creaky sounding jeep. ??
I’d appreciate any feedback.

Do you have locking diffs? Were they on? I noticed with locking diffs on the other say at full lock I was getting grabbing. Which I assumed because I had locking diffs on.

I don't think you should be hearing clunking in the rear-end though. I was a mechanic 20 years ago. But I'm new to the Jeep platform.

I went off roading a couple months ago. Got hung up several times in some nasty stuff. On the last day when we were on the road home I had this noise that sounded like a squeak or ting that I could only hear at 55 mph or lower. Turned out to be what I would call a damper ring on the rear drive shaft yoke at the differential. There is a rubber ring tightly sandwiched between a steel ring and the yoke body. I spun that ring on an obstacle and it spun the rubber out of it. The ring was obviously now free to jingle around on the yoke making the noise I was hearing. Electrical tape to replace the rubber and wrapped the entire thing as tight as possible and it worked fine. Not sure what would happen if I just cut the thing off.

Did you follow the break-in instructions after having the regear done?
I know when I had mine done, I had to put on a certain number of miles in 2WD and drive it in varying conditions a couple times. Then had to take it back to the shop at about 500 miles and have them check it out and they changed the diff fluid.

I remember them telling me not to use 4L until after the break-in.

Yes, I followed the breaking procedure as I had 700 miles on it when it went back in to get the bad bearing replaced so no issues there.

Thanks everyone it’s been hard to diagnose because it only happens in the Chattery rocks when you’re moving at a decent clip even off the throttle. I guess it’s one of those things just drive it until something happens lol.

Take it back to your gear mechanic. Have them look for metal shavings in your differentials. The popping IS NOT normal. You have a loose track bar, or sway bar connects etc. have some one get in and steer back and forth, bouncy the back end by standing in tailgate and you listening underneath… don’t get run over! Safety first!

Pop the diff cover off and inspect the gears.
We had the diff cover off like three times already to diagnose gear wine that turned out to be to nicks in a bearing. You do not hear it at all. Going down the road only in really rough rocky trails where the truck is vibrating due to the rough ground. It comes and goes and it doesn’t sound like it’s coming from the rear diff

Dumb ass question. Did you do both front and rear gears?

Also, to clarify, the popping that I hear in 4 low or a cracking sound whatever it is has been like that since I bought the truck, even in stock form with no lift or anything done. It always had that sound.
