Hi all!

I've seached the forum and can't seem to find the answer as it may be a South African issue. My JT Rubicon comes standard with 255/75R17 BFG MTs on the Rubicon 17x7.5" rims, but I'd like to change to bigger AT's. It seems in the USA the Rubicon comes with 285/70R17s as a standard size. The Fox suspension seems the same as do the fenders in the different countries. Is there anyone from SA or knowledge of these SA JT's able to comment if the 285/70R17s would fit without any modification/lift to the suspension/fenders? TIA (Thanks in advance, but also, TIA)

If I can fit 35's on a sport with just 1.75 inch wheel spacers I'd imagine 33's (285) will fit no problem for you. You've got the better Rubicon fenders.

I have similar dilemma but i bought car in Qatar. For some reason they sell it here with 255/75/17. 2 days ago upgraded to 285/70/17 and noticed that car goes less often to 8th gear. At least this is my impression. Today taking it to a dealer to adjust speedometer and will ask about gear ratio if needed to be upgraded (i don't want to loose warranty). I have sandrunner/mojave so it comes with 1" lift from factory. New tires fit perfect and no hardware modifications were needed.

Thanks for the reply. I'll go through to my local tire dealer and see what's available in 285/70R17. Will post pics!

I went from that size tire to 285/70/R17's very recently on my Sport. I had taken off the air dams between the fender and the bumper already, and that was the biggest consumer of available space. I'm pretty sure I could go with 315/75/R17's without a lift and it would work, but I'm happy with my tires I just bought, for now. Unless there is something structurally different with the trucks they sell there, it should work.

Did you reprogram it for the new tire size?

Is it just me or do these fenders not look like the highline fenders that come on the US
Rubicons?
Good eye.

With the high clearance fenders, the top of the flare is basically at the bottom of the hood line.

OP does not have high clearance fenders.

No, not yet. I postponed it till tomorrow morning. I have a feeling that transmission shift points have to be adjusted together with speedometer but I'm total newbie so it is just short research and feeling from a ride with new tires.

I have noticed that too. So in my case (Sandrunner) it is factory lift 1" plus high fenders and 285s fit perfectly.

To be clear, do you think the 285/70R17s won't fit without mods?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply they wouldn't fit.

I think they'll fit fine. Many people are running this size or bigger on stock rigs without high clearance fenders.

:) Thank you for the advice! Will check with the tire shop how they turn out.
