A dealer is telling me they can install it for $550. Does anyone have experience with adding brake assist? And is it OEM in your experience?

What exactly are you referring to by brake assist?

As dumb as humans are, technology is even stupider. I know of at least five instances where accidents were caused by the assistive brake feature.

The dumber the better IMO. Save your money

This feature is actually for my dad, who is older. For the accidents you know about, was the person rear ended or did the person hit another car?

I would be very skeptical of them adding it and turning it on for only $500. It's has a bunch of expensive parts that would need to be added as well as programming for it.

Does the vehicle already have adaptive cruise control, auto high beam headlights?
Is there a big box up around the area of the inside rear view mirror?
If not, that dealership is crazy.

If those things already exist - then it's in there already. It's part of FCW or Forward Collision Warning and the Adaptive Cruise Control.

You can go into the settings area in the radio and tell it how to react - alert only, or apply brakes, etc.

Look at the window sticker or the build sheet (which YOU can get using the VIN and a web site) and see if you see the Advance Safety Group.

The most recent incident was my neighbor who was on the highway and in order to avoid hitting a car that stopped abruptly in front of him, merged to an (open lane), but because the sensors picked up the car in front first, the brakes engaged in the new lane causing him to get smashed from behind

That's the fault of the other driver..... people blame the wrong stuff.
The dope was following too close and/or not paying attention.
The system didn't cause the crash, an idiot did - the one that hit them from behind.
You said he merged into an open lane - apparently not that open and a car was coming up on him.
I don't blame the system, I blame the drivers.

But that's not really the point is it? A fellow has asked for help and instead gets "don't do it, it's a stupid dangerous system".
I can give examples of where it's worked great and prevented trouble so here we are. Not answering his question but instead debating the merits of the system.
