So when I bought my new to me ‘21 Gladiator from CarMax I requested none of the Sirius XM services. I specifically said no, none, nothing. They did their part.

The first time I take it into my local Jeep dealer for the rear axle leak diagnosis they, without my permission, signed me up for a free 90 day account. Didn't think anything of it, as I wasn’t going to use it very much and when it expires all well and good. I hate Sirius as I think their advertising is deceptive at best.

Today I log into my Jeep account only to find their system has up to the day information about my Jeep including mileage, tire pressure, and more. Again without my permission, or me declining their ability to gather it (If given the opportunity).

All the above so wrong.

I’ve contacted Jeep and they are supposed to have someone contact me to resolve my issues which to be clear are:

Turn off all Sirius XM based functions including sat radio.
Quit collecting information about my Gladiator.

End of rant

I get it… but every company, government agency and even individuals want that information and related metadata now. It is what the world has become.

You are so right, but I can still do my part to not let them.

Do you have a cell phone, Apple or Andriod? Guess what, you can be tracked even with the phone turned off, it pings WiFi towers; and the Gov listens to all conversations.

I don’t understand why anybody would really care if Jeep knows the mileage or status of your oil changes.

But that’s just me I guess.

I do have an iPhone and Apple dies a pretty good job of letting you opt out of most of what they collect, and who the allow access to the data. But then I know it. Jeep has no business collecting information about the usage of my Jeep, status of my Jeep, without my permission. Dealer had no business signing me up for a Sirius account, free or otherwise, without asking me first. If they had asked I would have said no.

It’s none of their business, but if they had asked, and explained what they collected, why they collected it, who they were going to share it with, I may have said yes, but as it came as a surprise screw em.

I'd go back and see if they can do anything. Totally agree with your assessment of if they asked or even told you rather then turning it on and saying nothing.

They did it for the same reason someone decided to post in a for sales areas instead of the proper area.

Because they could and didn't think they were stepping over bounds, even if they were. It was a mistake when they thought it was a service they were doing most likely. I don't think that big brother really cares that much about your millage & oil change, that and sounds like they agreed to take it off. So what's the issue?

I can take the little I know from you just posting here and find a lot more about you then I dare say you're comfortable with if that is what is scary. I doubt you consented knowingly to that as well and no one will take that information down... Sounds like they said oops okay lets fix this for you?

I bet somewhere in some fine print for the service paperwork it may mention it. Maybe not, but I'd bet a shiny nickle that it does.

Could swear I read online how to opt out of all those uConnect / Sirius tracking services by contacting Jeep Corp so maybe when they call you back they can arrange that for you and you can let others know how to as well.

I’m sure you can find out a lot about me from very little information. This has been true for decades through public databases.

Signing me up for Sirius was a well intentioned (I‘m sure) action on the service writers part. Should have asked. I would have said no.

I'm pretty sure the OP didn't mean to post in a For Sale section. It was likely an accident .

That being said, maybe a moderator can move it to a more appropriate section.

The amount of information that is available to companies is staggering, almost impossible to escape completely and getting harder to. Look at the '24 and the new biggest, bestest radio being stock. No escaping data collection now. Your information IS going to be collected and sold. Before long, insurance companies are going to make it mandatory or they won't cover you. No more keeping your annual mileage away from the insurance to keep them from penalizing you for having a daily commute of 50+ miles.....
Some states and countries limit what can be collected and force a way to opt out of certain parts of the data but you're not completely free of it. The companies simply label certain info as "necessary" for the operation of the product and you can't opt out of that. Your personal info can be opted out of but your VIN and vehicle data points are likely labeled as necessary.

Your car and it's info CAN be hacked. If it has the physical ability to transmit, it can be hacked. Manufacture databases CAN be hacked. They have your account, they have your VIN. Once they have VINs, they ping the system to pinpoint locations of vehicles (if you've ever had OnStar or similar you know what I mean) and from there they get key fob codes and bam they have your car. They know where transmitters are and those get disabled pretty darn fast.

Someone that knows what information and how it is collected can do a lot to disguise it and add confusing info. I intentionally bought a jeep with a lower level radio so I wouldn't have a Uconnect that can transmit. Won't be able to do that going forward though. Maybe you can physically disconnect antennas to prevent it but the over-the-air updating won't work either and that's another thing that's going to be mandatory for operation too.

SO to boil it down.... There's LOTS of reasons why you'd like to keep your vehicle from transmitting information and lots more reasons why you want to limit and obfuscate the information on you that does get collected. If you're a gun guy, use duck duck go to do your gun related searches, and then at the same time GOOGLE things like huffington post's list for the best folk festivals and patchouli recipes. Flower power baby!

That part was a joke btw. I's sure a moderator will move it eventually.

Most likely the dealership didn't mean anything by it. There are far more things to worry about and hopefully the jeep dealership didn't get yelled at too much. The sirius is signing up for a service so I agree on that, the other end was probably just a hey this isn't turned on and a young tech just flipped it on was the point. Not an issue with wanting it off, and sounds like they are willing to do what was requested.

I have none of that in my jeep as well, because I don't care if I have it. I've a lower end model bought used for daily driver and for light off-roading out of the box was the reason I got it. I'm well aware how easy it is, I gather & interpret data for a living...

Not personal data or buying such things these days, but when I worked for a marketing firm for a short stance when I was much younger. It was crazy stupid not what you can get free from places but what information you can buy very cheaply from everyone else.

Guess my point was hopefull your not too mad at the dealership for what is a common practice these days... yes the sirius thing because it was a paid service is a no no without your verbal conscent or should be if it wasn't.

edit:
(I work in manufactoring now, so don't make me the evil person because I track data. I do things like tracking things going in and out, efficiencies, etc... at a furniture plant for last decade and half. I do question the morals of what I did when I was a rather wet behind the ears programmer looking back on that though. It was legal but bit scary, reasoning I have very little smart devices in my house. Think about that stove with smart activation... do you think that had the security protection your phone does? Crap... now you've made me the paranoid old man.... LOL)
