So I got a nice little weekend trip coming up with the Wifey. Also yesterday my oil change was due and it was too late to use the Mopar express lane at my dealer. Can't believe I've already done 4k in 6 weeks but ok. Anyway i was feeling pretty smart with my Advance Auto Parts rewards and got a Mopar filter and 5quarts of Penzoil Platinum Premium for 32 dollars. Got down to do the oil change when i got home and it went by like a breeze and reset my oil life. Decide hey I got a little Daylight left, ima save me time and slap on my 37s rn. fast forward an hour and im hoppin in to make appropriate adjustments on my tazer mini. turns out i forgot to CHANGE THE TIRE SIZE BACK TO STOCK. so i spent 2 weeks rolling around on my stock wheels and tires and the truck thought it was on 37s. ?‍♂ Well that explains why i was racking up miles so quickly. And why i thought everyone was doing 80 plus to work on a parkway. I did get record MPG tho cus i drove everywhere at like 45-50 mph thinking i was doing 60 plus. Anyway thought it would be funny to share.

Your MPG calculation is likely also being impacted by the wrong tire size - your Jeep believes that you drove farther on the same tankful of gas.

The TJ era, 1997-2006, you had to change a plastic speedometer gear to a different tooth count when you went larger tires or gear change. A Lot of people didn't know that and they would drive around thinking they were getting 20mpg in a 4.0L Jeep.

Does this mean that an unscrupulous owner could understate the miles driven by setting a larger tire size?

Had similar on the car my brother bought for me.
He rented a car to go into WI, bought the car and drove it back home to central Iowa.
I went to pick it up and thought - geesh, everyone is flying around me like I'm sitting still - what the heck is up with this? I figured I'd be checked for speeding in that car - I mean, it screamed "hey cops, look at me" with the headers, racing mufflers and such...........
The prior owner had smaller tires than that version of the car came with and to make it worse, he sort of built the thing out of parts and the wrong speedo cable gear was installed in the transmission.
I put correct size tires on it, put the right color speedo gear in and now the speedometer matches perfectly. I bet it was at least 6 or 7 mph off if not more.

Ah, the simple days when you changed your speedometer to match by swapping in a different color gear.
