They are not required to list proprietary information.

I know proprietary information isn't required to be detailed, but it is customary to at least mention its presence on the SDS, typically listed simply as "proprietary ingredient/package" at such and such range of percentage in section 3. Kinda hard to believe the claim there's something extra in there when adding the percentages of the only two components listed gives you 100% of the product.

The other additivized DEF brands don't list their proprietary information, either, but the SAE study gives us a few hints. They all seem to use an additive (surfactant) that improves vaporization at low operating temperature ranges for the SCR. In a more recent study, the SAE tested 18 surfactants to see which concentration/formulations were the most effective.

It's crazy that a gallon of def is costing more than a gallon of gas.

Last year we averaged 2.29 gallons of DEF per month, which came out to 27.5 gallons. Platinum DEF is approximately $22.00 per 2.5 gallons. So, I spent approximately $242 dollars in 2023 on DEF. We now have three vehicles that use DEF, so I suspect the total annual usage will increase in 2024.

2018 Total gallons of DEF: 12.5 gallons (1.05 gallons per month)
2019 Total gallons of DEF: 15 gallons (1.25 gallons per month)
2020 Total gallons of DEF: 10.5 gallons (.09 gallon per month)
2021 Total gallons of DEF: 25 gallons (2.08 gallons per month)
2022 Total gallons of DEF: 25 gallons (2.08 gallons per month)
2023 Total gallons of DEF: 27.5 gallons (2.29 gallons per month)

My coffee costs a lot more than a gallon of diesel too. So does deck stain. Not sure there's any reason to compare prices in this way

This is true, but I can understand where @Vtur is coming from. DEF is one more added expense to the already high cost of owning and operating a modern diesel. Despite the disdain for DEF, I'll continue to keep my diesel-powered trucks emissions compliant for as long as I have to. This is why it's important to me to keep the emissions system in good working order. EGR valves, EGR coolers, DPFs, DEF pumps, DEF injectors, DEF sensors, NOx sensors, and SCRs aren't cheap to replace.
