Has anyone mounted a Gen 3 Starmount / Starlink on top of the Alucab? I'm concerned that the tilt (especially near trees) when the tent is up will result in more obscurations and poor signal. I feel like the starlink will get most used when we're at camp with the top up.

Another option is on load bars in front of the Alucab. I might be able to fit a couple storage boxes there too if I went that direction.

Last, and least pleasing, is hood mounting. Arrrr.

Interested to hear what others did and how effective is your solution.

Just got my Starlink and am very interested in this as well. Right now we are just using the ground and the hood with no mounting. I was also wondering about an adjustable pole attached to the right rear Molle panel. I was wondering if something like that could work.

I’m super interested to hear how people are getting on with this too. Have a Starlink but not mounted it yet. Using it outside like @flipboltz is.

Right now my solution is working towards mounting above the cab.

I have three spare load bars so I bought some gutter mount feet and a couple of Wolf Pack Pro boxes with mounts. So there will be a box above each of the driver and passenger with a space in between them to put the starmount.

Unfortunately I started this project too close to our planned Alaska trip. So this time we’ll have some extra storage but the starlink is stored in and used from its original box.

I dont have the alu-cab but the problem still exists with a RTT. I really wanted a hard mount solution as well, but after thinking about it for a bit, I think a standard ground location is better than hard mount. Yeah you can't use it while on the road that way but how often would you really want/need it while underway? It's not like we are in boats. The other reasoning was for the situation you just said, while at camp. I dont know about anyone else but when camping I do try to at least be in a position where at the hottest point of the day my vehicle is in shade of some type, where possible. Granted that does not help with hard mounted solar panels, but if you are in a thick forested area like were I live, not having the ability to put the satellite in an optimum location could really kill the whole point of having it in the first place if you can never use it or if you have to park in the sun all day long.

So for that reason I have been trying to think of a solution to hard mount it to the outside of a plastic box - or a box with a flippable lid - that still keeps the inside of the box water/dust tight but can serve as the base for the satellite, with only needing to remove the cable/router and place by the vehicle or where one is working. Just some thoughts.

You make some good points. For the next six weeks I’ll just deploy the antenna as needed when stopped. During that trip I’ll make mental notes of visibility from where I park or camp.

We do often find the need for internet while in the road, mostly looking for stuff along our route, making reservations, that type of thing.

With that in mind I was thinking of putting a 12v starmount in between the boxes in the pic. That’s where I’ll be looking for visibility. Unless the sun is overhead, I think I can still get satellite coverage while parked in some shade. We’ll see…

A thought just came to mind what about making it easily removable from the roof and pick up a second cable. Then you can leave it on the roof unless it needs to be moved somewhere then you can use the extra cable to plug in and run to the router. This way the router and wire can still be permanently mounted and only remove and relocate the antenna when absolutely necessary. That seems like a nice idea!!

Also. FWIW this is my home starlink with i think the gen 2 satellite. These two trees are enough of an obstruction that it does cause interruption half a dozen times a day. The interruption is only maybe 15 seconds at most but it is enough to kick me off of my secure VPN.

Starmount makes a quick release mount, but it’s not lockable and It’s a different wire at that point (45v), so moving antenna probably not easily doable.

I have the antenna, cable, router, and power supply stored/tucked away in a super convenient place. Everything is already wired except the last connection to the antenna. Right now I just have to place the antenna (cable already wired) and switch the inverter on to use. A great solution but not internet on the go. I may end up being happy as is… then I have a space for a third box :)
