I would love to get one of these, but the monthly plan turns me off completely.

I could stomach the 500 bucks for the device. But 150 bucks a month with only 50 gigs of data is unusable.
Those numbers are not quite right.
  • It's $600 for the device.
  • The service plan is $30/mo
  • Data cap is 50gb/mo
    • you can automatically opt in for more data at $1/gb
  • This plan is tied to your home service plan
    • you must have starlink at home to get this - currently
      • it might be offered in the future to all
    • if you cancel your home plan, you cancel this, they are tied together
  • You cannot cancel this plan, and then use this device for the standard roam plan which is unlimited data at $150/mo
So basically this adds $30/mo to my existing home satellite for a total of 150/mo and gives me a second starlink with the ability to email, txt, send coms/pics, etc... for only $30 more a month. Otherwise I would be forced into the $150/mo extra which would bring my running total to $280/mo. My current life situation dictates I may not be going on many camping trips anymore (very very sad sad-face). So I can't justify a second starlink with the roam plan for an extra $150/mo. I also do not want to convert my home starlink to the roam plan because I need it for work and I dont want to be uninstalling and reinstalling it all the time. For me, this fits the bill of better communications than Garmin offers, without the unnecessary cost of the full roam plan. Maybe if I can find a way to travel more I will opt for the roam plan but this is a pretty small price to pay for testing I think.

My assumption after researching is this is basically a 'beta' test to see how many people will be interested in the Starlink Mini before offering it wide spread. It might also be an introduction to offer this in other countries. There is much speculation but nobody knows for sure what the deal is. Knowing this is not offered outside of the 'special select group' I decided to try it. Worst thing that will happen is I will donate it to my dad for him to use as emergency coms, and I will opt for the standard roam option at $150/mo. But seeing as how this has integrated wifi, and is a very small footprint I wanted to give it a shot, plus I have a feeling, based on lots of reading, this might end up going main stream and have higher data options.

Why is 50gb unusable for off grid use?

I think he is under the impression that it is 50gb limit for the standard $150/mo price. Which would be pretty dumb.

But it's not. It's only $30/mo for the 50gb.

However, the fact that you have to have a home plan in order to have this (for right now anyway) probably is a turn-off for many. I would sure like to know how many people this was offered to and how many signed up. That would be a cool stat to see.

Yeah. Having the mobility panel and a business priority data plan, I’m disappointed that it wasn’t offered to me.

Yeah I would have thought the high paying users would have had a chance also. Maybe send them a message about it. Then again you probably need the unlimited data.

up and running quicker than any electronic item I have ever purchased before. 2 big trees right in the way and it has signal no problem.

Yeah and thats the difference. I am capped at 50gb total. if I want more, I pay more.

How much do you use a month when you're using it while not at home?

There is some speculation about capacity as to why they didn't offer it to everyone - I can't remember the details though. Because the plan is tied to my home account I can see why they didnt offer that to those with only a roam plan. Who knows. I bet you in another year or less they offer it widespread. It is super nice having it an all in one package and not worrying about a separate router.

I’d really like it if they offered it as an add on to mobility. I’d put it on the trailer.

This was last month. I’d expect July to be a little higher, but not exceed 50. It’s unlimited, but priority speed up to 50. I can increase it to a terabyte, but for stupid money, and I don’t need that.

Dang! I thought you would have been more in the data range I am with your job and all. I'm pushing 587gb now and still 10 more days to go for this billing cycle. Probably gonna be close to a 800gb with some of the projects I have coming up the next couple weeks.

That would be awesome to have one on your trailer. I'm contemplating a permanent mount or not. Nobody makes one yet though but it would be cool if it did end up working in motion. I kinda doubt it will, they may have a lock on it.

Do you really see a benefit in the mobile priority plan?? I check my speeds routinely for fun and even when I'm uploading a 50gb file I still am pushing over 200/25 speeds. But theres probably less than 30 in this county that have it and it's a sparsely populated area. Maybe it would be more apparent in a big city like Seattle.

I have the lowest mobility plan. I need it when I’m actually moving down the road so I don’t miss phone calls. I only use bandwidth when I’m not home or in my office. Otherwise it’s off. It’s on the Jeep full time. I pause the service outside of camping season. So usually November to February it’s off.

So thisn morning I got on the site as I have a need for a unit for a short stint this summer. It appears the roam is now available without home service for residential ? I can go thru the entire order process but have not clicked submit yet. Has anyone recently looked at this option. If I can spend $600 on the unit and $50 a month its ideal for my use case. And it shows the ability to pause services.
