Hi all:

I’m new to this forum, but I’ve appreciated getting to know it over the last three weeks or so as I try to figure out what’s going with my new truck. I’m hoping that others might have some experience with / insight into my situation. (It looks like folks sometimes tag @JeepCares on these kinds of questions, so I'll do the same here.)

BACKSTORY

I’ve owned this 2022 MT Gladiator sport, purchased as “Certified Used” with 31k miles and a brand-new recall clutch, for just over three weeks. I love driving this thing, but it’s already the most problematic vehicle I’ve ever owned---and I’ve owned at least five other MT Mopar products in my lifetime (among a couple dozen other vehicles). Happily, it's still under factory warranty for a bit, and I do have an extended warranty in place after that.

Within about three days after taking possession of this thing, the “Pentastar Tick” emerged. I brought it back to the same certifying dealer, and they did a camshaft and lifter replacement that seems to have solved that problem. But but but...

CURRENT PROBLEM

I’ve (also) had consistent problems with a Chewbacca-like moaning noise when shifting the manual transmission, almost always on a steep hill. (I live near Boulder, CO, and so I drive mountain roads regularly.) As noted above, this happens on a recall clutch that was supposedly brand new at the time that I took delivery of this vehicle.

This noise mostly happens while descending, but it’ll happen once in a while when ascending as well. It also occasionally happens in groups of two or three as in the following video. (I apologize for my annoying, Chicago-accented narration.)

I do see at least one other thread on this forum that’s similar.

https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/...accelerating-2022-jeep-gladiator-sport.77068/

This thread, however, seems to suggest that the recall clutch fixed the issue. Obviously, I’m in a different boat since I’m on a brand-new recall clutch.

There’s another thread, too, about a related sound with an ACT aftermarket clutch.

https://www.jeepgladiatorforum.com/forum/threads/act-clutch-engagement-noise.78928/

But this ACT situation doesn't seem exactly like mine, either.

QUESTION FOR YOU ALL

At the moment, I’m trying to get this noise to happen when there’s actually a tech in the truck with me: this dealer is not willing to do anything until a live ear can confirm what’s going on.

Are there other folks dealing with this sort of noise on a recall clutch? If so, has anyone found the root of the problem and / or a successful fix? I’d love to be able relay information to this dealer as I try to get them to address things.

Many thanks,

Steve

Noises that appear mainly during gear changes may be due to problems with the synchronizers in the gearbox. Synchronizers are responsible for aligning the gears to ensure smooth gear changes, but if they are worn or damaged, this can lead to unusual noises during changes, especially in stressful situations such as steep hills

Sounded to me like it was grinding the gears. Normally I'd point to the driver on that but given the years of issues with these MT clutches I actually think your clutch might not be engaging correctly (i.e., you push the pedal but it's still sticking for a fraction of a second then BZZZRRRRT).

Hope that helps.

I appreciate both of these replies so far: I'd also first thought that synchros might be at issue, but this "feels" different somehow than other vehicles I've had with worn synchros.

Instead, when this noise happens, my sense is that something is hanging up somehow. It's also inconsistent enough to be annoying--but it does happen on every mountain drive at some point or other (whether I drive normally or gingerly).

At any rate, I've got an appointment with a different dealer coming up. If they can fix it, I'll post relevant information here.
