Doing a transmission pan swap on my 8 spd auto. Do I need to seal the pan gasket when reinstalling with a light coat of auto trans fluid? On both sides or just the side mating with the housing? Does the same technique apply for the factory gasket as the aftermarket rubber gasket? Thanks in advance.

Factory service instructions mention no lubrication of the gasket, just inspect for damage and replace if needed.

I have done two pan drops and reuse of the factory gasket and both went back in dry. You could lightly coat with ATF or even petroleum jelly if you so choose, but it is not imperative.

What pan are you replacing it with, oem or aftermarket? If aftermarket, I would follow whatever their instructions are.

You want a good seal between the metal and the gasket. All surfaces should be clean with no foreign debris in-between. Do not coat the gasket with anything, unless the manufacturer instructions specify it as part of the process.
