I had some whining while coasting/ decelerating with light load so I figured it was my pinion bearings… so of course in true enthusiast fashion I see this as an opportunity to regear! But what the heck man? Anyone got an explanation for this?

I have rebuilt 100s of diffs and when I hear a wine when coasting or decelerating it is almost always a loose pinion. There could be many reasons why you have a loose pinion. Bearings / crush sleeve or the nut back off.

That's not stock is it? OEM pinions use a double ball bearing bearing, not tapered.

I stand corrected.. i think, front bearing is tapers, back bearing is ball.

MIght want to consider this when you do your regear, this replaces the double ball bearing.

Did you use an impact on the pinion nut? If so, it may be possible that the teeth were damaged during disassembly, especially if there was excessive play in the outer pinion bearing.

Who does that??????

You hold the yoke, in some cases with a special tool that bolts to the joke, with a center opening for a socket to fit through, then you used a breaker bar to remove the nut as needed
Impacts on pinion nuts.
At least I never do.

Heavily considered it but the master kit included koyo bearings so I rocked with it if I ever have the same issue that’s gonna be my solution.
