Be nice if they pushed a software update that when you turn it off, stays off until the next time if ever turn it back on.
Yeah that’s how the aftermarket solutions work. Would be nice to have it built in, but I already have one.

This is the way.

I'm not upset about the option, nor am I upset about trying out new ways to save fuel and emissions. But that's what it should be, an option. The only things that shouldn't be optional, in my opinion, are safety-related features.

I have programmed "myself" to turn this off when I start the vehicle., and yes Hootbro, I wish it was a "until I want it back" option but not so. Remember, this is not an EPA mandate but an easy gov. subsidy for installing it. They want to stop the subsidies in hopes that vehicle manufacturers stop installing it. Remove the carrot and beat you with the stick.
"Oh no, a scary button that I have to push. How will I ever survive?" Even if I hate it and it only works sometimes, it personally causes me no harm. Most shut it off with a programmer anyway.
I liken it to the person who listens to offensive broadcast material only so they can call the FCC to complain because changing the channel is too difficult.
Just what we need, another personal grievance story looking to become the next culture war.

My start/stop hasn't worked for the past 2 years. No idea why. Just last week I noticed it started working again.
Your batteries are weak. You probably went on a long enough drive to fully charge them. Mine did that before I had to replace them at 5 yrs. They run parallel so they charge and discharge at the same rate.

Sounds like the smaller battery is dying.
Why? Because the internet experts keep saying that?
It can be the main battery, or, that he simply doesn't drive it enough.
The "it's always the small battery that causes it" is a disproven myth.

IF you don't keep the batteries up, this happens. The batteries can be good, but you need long drives and frequent drives to overcome the parasitic draw of the vehicle. If you have short commutes (20 minutes or so to work) - it ain't gonna keep the batteries up.
A longer drive - say 45 minutes to an hour or so, or some more frequent or longer trips and suddenly the batteries are now both fully charged (or over 12.4 volts) and ESS starts working again.

Like some articles state - even if the EPA drops the "incentive" (which is a credit for CAFE rules) - many car makers are invested in and stand behind it, so there's nothing saying it will disappear. It is a big thing in the EU - so companies selling there may keep it fleet-wide to prevent differences.
It will be interesting to see if the EPA insiders actually DO drop the carrot, and if they do, will car makers decide to back off? Sort of doubtful in a way since all of the engineering and background work is done. It's there and costs little to keep it in place.
IMO - this is a "wait and see" - it has no teeth or anything saying "get rid of it".
