I've had my Auto Start/Stop disabled ever since I installed a Tazer in late 2020. I totally forgot about it until one day this summer decided to enable it for whatever reason and I noticed it didn't engage. When scrolling through the dash menus I came to the Auto Start/Stop screen and there was a message that it was not available because the battery was charging (I'm assuming this means the second battery). I have no other indication that the battery's charge is low. Anyways it took a 3 hour road trip to "charge" the battery enough to turn the system back on. After a day or 2 of stop and go driving the system quit engaging for the same reason that the battery was charging. Hasn't worked since. I'm wondering if turning it off for so long makes the computer forget to even charge the 2nd battery? I'm wondering why I'm not receiving a warning message that my 2nd battery isn't fully charged?

I have my A.S.S. disabled through my TAZER and just recently I was getting the same message. Does not matter whether you disable it for a long time then enable it. The cause is simply your AUX battery needs to be replaced.

I figured as much. I'm surprised it's not popping up a check engine light. Are aux batteries under warranty? Or if I don't care about A.S.S. do I really need to replace?

A bad main battery will also drain the Aux battery.

Failing batteries do not usually trigger a CEL. If issues arise, both need checked to see which one is having trouble. Usually, they both fail around the same time, but not always. Sometimes, the main battery is the one that goes bad, not the Aux. They are both paralleled together all the time, except at the startup test, and during ESS events. If one goes bad, it needs replaced, otherwise the problems become worse.

Just had this happen and it was the big battery that was bad not the small battery. I've read and been told by more than one knowledgeable techs with years in the business that disabling the small battery is just asking for issues. Turning it off by pressing button still allows it to charge but disabling it does something different I guess. With mine I went to AutoZone and they said my big battery was fine so I assumed it was the small battery. Went to the dealership and on their machine it was showing a dead cell in the big battery and they replaced the big battery and after about 25 miles of driving the ESS started working again. I'm out of warranty so it cost me $300 to have them replace it but it was worth it because I would have replaced the small battery and that wasn't the issue.

For reference my ESS had stopped working for probably about 4 or 5 weeks and then I went outside one morning to go to work and the jeep wouldn't crank. Still had everything lighting up good but would not turn over. I charged it and all was good but the ESS still didn't start working. I'd have them check both batteries because by having it turned off with the Tazer it may have put extra strain on the big battery.

Going forward, have you disabled ess?

No, I have never disabled it by a Tazer or anything like that. My wife turns it off when the drives the Jeep by pushing the button. She drove the Jeep for around 2 or 3 weeks prior to it not working anymore but I'm not sure if that had anything to do with the battery issue. When I'm driving it I let it do the Stop/Start thing. If I don't want it to do it I've got it pretty much down to how hard I need to push the brake to keep it from engaging.
