Hi fellow Gladi owners. Need some input by people who are not biased by living in Germany
We have a Gladiator and besides corrosion and trypical Pentastar stuff very happy.

As a secondary, we have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Overland 3.0 CRD assembled in Graz (so pretty solid assemply quality). The tax on it are high and the insurance is almost double that of the Gladiator if we insured it to the same level (it isn't and costs us a little less than the Gladi, do not see the point to have a 6000 Euro vehicle written off and not get even a 1/4 of that in that case. So just important that if we fuck up on the Autobahn, if we were to have an accident with a Porsche 911 GT3 is going to be covered and not bankrupt us).
The vehicle is stock, with a ton of oem from factory stuff still at 125 000 miles. The om642 is solid and has seen regular oil changes and that is it. We did do a transmission flush.
We bought the vehicle 4 years ago, and besides brakes and glow plug control module, we have done nothing on it.
We can no longer drive it to the nearest city, as it is Euro 4, no DPF, which also means fewer problems in my books, and I can use the Gladiator.
It is holding oil fine, but we are thinking oil cooler may have to be replaced eventually, as well as timing chain. The engine is known for some other weaknesses that like to fail at around that point. If, then a rebuild would make sense. Obviously, a ton of electronics. There is a time now to do all the bushings ball joints and so on...
There is a little deadzone when putting it in D or R, but as soon as it revs a little it takes of just fine. A little rust, but nothing crazy.

On the other hand, we can get into a 1987 XJ, 3-door,4.0 4x4 limited that has had a refurb in 2017 and has rust and so on taken care of. It has seen 220 000 miles, has KME lpg system, so runs for the same cost as the diesel here
It has the historic H Plate, so cheap to insure, cheap to run and can be driven everywhere.
Interior conditions are similar.
It comes with another 4.0 run 100 000 miles, nother auto and transfercase and a ton of left over spares.
Obviously it is a classsic oldie and needs ongoing work, but it kinda seems to make sense. Would stay stock or slightly lifted and driven on the LPG for long distances until system gives out, then the unit comes out completely and rebuilt 4.0 goes in.

So theoretically... seems like a great opportunity, but... devil I know, also sentimental about the GC

We have a 60kg dog that we like to go on drives with and theoretically I feel the XJ is very practical, but as always, when you live with the vehicle, you get surprised. Like, for example, when we bought the Glaid I thought I could leave the rear seats in, and I could have, but it would have sucked for our pupper... so we took em out and put in a platform. Tools and spares underneath, dogobed ontop.

Anyway.
Lets hear some opinions. Keeping all 3 is not really an option, space time, and money. No need to have a vehicle fall apart because it is not used enough.

All the best!

I love the 4.0! I also am very fond of diesels. The 3.0l does not cut it in my book. I have never owned one, but I have read enough about it. My wifes cousin had a Ram with the 3.0l and bragged on how it will outlast my Duramax. I still have my Durarmax. His Ram lasted about two years. He had so many issues with the dpf clogging that he was afraid of keeping it past the warranty period.

It also didn’t have the pulling power he needed for his 28 foot camper. I remember the first year he owned it. He brought it to deer camp, but for some reason he parked the camper at the bottom of the drive. At the time he said that he didn't want to block anyone. When he got his new truck (5.7l) he revealed that he couldn't get the camper up the steep drive with the 3.0l.

My son has a 4.0 and loves it. He had a bit of engine performance work done to his last one.

Thanks for the input.

Just a side note, I hear you, but you cannot really compare a merc built om642, especially pre dpf in 2005, with an ecodiesel or a vm diesel with all the dpf and now adblue nonsense. Very honestly, those engines, also the om642, were not designed for full-size trucks or their application, but are fine in what is still a smallish SUV with low loading capacity and normal towing capacity.

I must have gotten it confused with something else. I swear that 3.0 was used here in the states on a couple of Jeeps and on a few Mercedes vehicles. I see now that the 3.0l eco diesel is not the same engine you are talking about.

Still doesn't sound like a robust diesel engine that will last hundreds of thousands of miles. The introduction of the DPF only made matters worse for your version of the 3.0l.

My pup is still able to jump up into anything. In a couple of more years he will end up riding in the Grand Cherokee. It at least lowers down a bit to make it easier to climb in.

I think you should keep the XJ and the Gladiator. I hate that you are taxed on HP and/or displacement. The lpg 4.0l is less expensive because of the fuel type or age?

Thank you. Yes, you are taxed more on diesel than you are on gas engines and since 2009 (CO₂: >120 g/km) age also matters, tightening to 2014+ (CO₂: >95 g/km). LPG is cheaper because it’s treated like petrol.
  • 2009–2011: first 120 g/km free
  • 2012–2013: first 110 g/km free
  • 2014+: first 95 g/km free
€2 per gram of CO₂/km above a free allowance.

You are correct, in the Grand Cherokee wk CRD(2005 - 2010 in europe and I think 2007 -2010 in the US) the 3.0 CRD was offered. The engine was a OM642. It is by no means a proper oldschool cummins, but it is known to last 300 000 miles in many Mercedes and Grand Cherokees without issue, only the timing chain at some point does lengthen and the oilcooler seal is a pia to change. If any debris gets in during that, you can do a full revision or junk it, but there was a slight miscalculation and the oil pump is not suited for the application... there are fixes that make this engine almost legendary, but in Germany, the labor hourly cost make it insane, and it is simply not worth in most cases on a GC that is worth between 2000 and 10000 $

The AirSuspension in newer GCs is a blessing :) Your pupper will thank you :like:

Wow…….Three totally different vehicles…. Gotta keep the Gladdy…… well, because…everyone needs a truck and you don’t need two SUV’s.

We used to own a 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited years ago. V8…Auto …. Vey cushy, extremely comfortable, had all the bells & whistles….. Sold it to my Mother-in-law and she had it for many years. She sold it with only 80,000 miles on it. In the time that we had it…. Problems? They were notorious for warping rotors. Rear roof leaked into the spare tire area. We replaced all the door locks & window motors due to failure ( on all 4 doors). Blend door issue with climate control…. Radiator rusted apart/replaced. Something in the front suspension rusted apart (can’t remember). I’m sure i’m missing something. Aside from all that…. The motot & transmission were solid and we towed 6,500 lbs with that thing on weekends and trips down to TN.

I’ve never owned or driven an XJ…… but I’ve helped friends work on theirs (installing lift kits, etc). Ride comfort??😆 NOTHING like the Grand (if that’s a concern). If it has the same 4.0l and transmission (manual) as our YJ had = bulletproof. The one thing that makes me cringe….. UNIBODY
When engine/tranny/suspension components are bolted to a rusted Unibody - Not fun to fix (or cheap).

That 2005 WK with the 3.0 CRD is a sweet ride. The did have them here in the US but they were super rare. I rode trails with a guy who had one, don't recall he had any major issues but the engine was kind of an anomoly and hard to find people to work on it over here, even the dealers.

Personally I have had an 89 XJ, 88 XJ, 07 WK and 10 WK2 before my JT. For a trail vehicle and / or mostly recreational vehicle I would choose an XJ hands down. The 4.0 will never die even if you try to kill it. Its ok if its a little rusty because the important parts will work forever. BUT if you've never owned an XJ you will feel like you are taking a big step down in creature comforts so be ready for that. Kind of like going from a JL/JT to a YJ. If you like the nicer aspects of the WK interior or your taking long road trips, stick with the WK.

I’m not going to be of much help, I am fairly biased here. I do drive a diesel gladiator though, and would not trade it for a gas model.

Thank you all for sure.

Yeah, I opened a can with the xj...
A friend who kind of collect them now offered me a 4 door xj 4x4 2000 black near stock in very good condition with even a parking heater... heck I thought I knew a thing or two about xjs

It sure is. The torque is amazing, mpg obviously also and QDII is very very underrated and I have outwheeled some built vehicles...
Here you can find enough people to work on it, but under 170 Euro an hour no way... and their pump is a 1000 Euro part, the rebuild another 4k and then I still have at some point a rebuild trans coming my way for sure.... electronics are getting old and I am struggling justifying dumping so much money into it when simple things like door seals are a neightmare to find.... arghh... if I won the lottary I would keep them all 😂😅😇 it is an amazing vehicle, but the gladi is the daily these days and it is sitting more than it should, and there is just a lot I cannot fix myself on it i guess... Also there is no way limping it home when it goes wrong.
Reckon the xj is slightly more likely in that regard. Still had an auto, but Becker heard those letting people down.

I’m not going to be of much help, I am fairly biased here. I do drive a diesel gladiator though, and would not trade it for a gas model.

Ohh I get it. And I would have gone diesel if they had been available as rubicons here or max tow package been a thing, as well as if I lived somewhere I could fix circumvent adblue....
A friends JLU just had an Issue, 5000 Euro for the sensor unit as it come with the tank and so on... that was like no thank you
Argh...
I am sure there will be an XJ and an MJ in our future... the question is... when.

Can you do brain surgery and rip out the 3.6 and put in the 3.0? Is that something that they allow? Keep the Gladiator and get better fuel mileage plus more torque. I'm guessing it's a turbo diesel? I'm sure that swapping would require some real detail and some ingenuity!

Nice Gladiator and color. Same as mine.
I'm a fan of the XJ'S and MJ heck my MJ traveled all over Europe in 90s. The renix system can really piss you off at times (my 90XJ) has it. The AW-4 automatic transmissions are solid if that is in the 85. Yes, the one in my 90XJ has had several problems but definitely not the transmission fault just ran hard off road in water and 270000 miles to. Blown up torque converter and roasted one. A significant weakness is the coolant bottle cracking then leak leading to overheating. I got to the point of ordering a spare/ new one every few years and replace it. It seemed the harder I ran it the better it went. Being parked off and on for up to years was definitely harder on it. Rear main seals leak but don't replace the oil pump unless it actually needs it. My 90 is a dead now from wiring problems and rusting from being in fairly deep water many times. Now if I can finish up fixing my MJ then start on the 91XJ bump lift kit, axles, bumpers, and other part over.

This is Harald the Kanadian XJ 1987 (made some mistakes with the date earlier. Pics are the owners, verbally I have agreed, obviously money for vehicle papers and keys is what really matters :)
But so far everything is organised.

It would be very hard, cost a ton and you would have to meet or better the emission criterias from the models of 3.0 2020.
It would be cheaper to put a 392, cost about 75 thousand Euro...
At that cost you can easily import a 3.0 Rubi or Mojave and should be able to get emissions past and accepted for import with some loops, as the sahara and Overland obviously come with different factory recorded emissions due to tires and ride height... but doable...

My dream vehicle would be a Rubicon with the wide axles on a mojave frame and a mechanical OM606 😅 that will never be legal, but you could find a pickup frame from 1980-90 and merry a Gladiator cab and then build the OM606 and merc G Transfercase and Transmission to some HD Axles... still expensive and intense

We are keeping the Gladiator for sure. Don't mind the 3.6 mpg and kinda like the Penta, not the best low down torque and ofcourse it is neither a hemi/LS nor a cummins. Once it starts screaming it gets the job done though 😅
