It seems the southern border is the common theme per the replies. I live within eyesight of the Canadian border, and per the CBC news I pick up on FM, Vancouver has a thriving grand theft auto scene. That doesn’t seem to have bled over the border as much though. From what I’ve heard the Vancouver syndicate makes use of the port facilities to get lifted vehicles into containers and out of the country ASAP.Anywhere within a few hours drive of a neighboring country is a target area. There was a brief rash of Jeep thefts about an hour north of LA a couple months ago.
You’d think the CBP checking license and registration to confirm ownership would be standard procedure. It’s certainly not up north, though on the southern end it would seem prudent.
