Is it the mopar and warn winch plates that work?

If you’re willing to cut the clutch handle you could use spacers/washers to push the bumper forward. I just didn’t want to modify it in both directions…

I went ahead and got one with synthetic rope for the $399 deal. I didn't realize until today that the APEX version can be bought with wire rope. When did they start doing that?? I got the last one available with the syn rope.

HF has had the wire rope option for a long time. I thought it even predated the synthetic rope. It has always been considerably less in price. I have see it in the low 300's not that long ago but just passed by it since the wire stuff scares me (I can't imagine the wire breaking in the middle of a pull and coming back in my direction).

Now they are advertising both on sale at the same price. Things change.

I saw three different Apex 12k‘s for sale at HF this year, wire cable model, synthetic rope with wireless controller and synthetic rope without wireless controller (wire controller only).

been using wire winch cable for over 20 years, no broke cables, no body got cut in half kind of stories…But I was taught How to handled it and what safety precautions you should use while winching with it. Synthetic rope doesn’t store much energy, wire cable does. Good gloves on handling the wire rope. A huge difference in the physical weight of wire vs. Synthetic. Don’t be afraid, be aware.

They've had the ZXR 12,000 winch with wire rope for a LONG time. It was on sale for $269 on Black Friday. But the APEX version of the winches....that one has never been seen with wire rope in my local stores around here until now. I do think wire rope is better if you are using it to operate a manual snowplow or using it in rocky environments because wire rope withstands abrasion far better. But for me I like the synthetic because my winches get infrequent use and synthetic is just lighter and safer.

For what it's worth, the wireless controller came with my Apex 12000 in the box. Others here told me that it was a great feature on Apexs' they had purchased. I paid about $480 for mine with the coupon if I remember last year but it is, in my mind, extremely well worth the price. That's even if you choose to extend the warranty for two years (which I did not).

Yeah the only one that's in my HF store has a wireless remote but also includes a 4 pin wire that you can plug into the remote.

I would not bet everything on a wireless remote because I'm not going to consistently check the battery. There's no indicator of battery life on the remote.

I really do not understand the full functionality of my remote and what it does differently from a remote for my TV or stereo.

Is there something that the HF remote does that would drain the batteries as you are inferring? In an extreme case, wouldn't a spare pair of alkalines in the glovebox solve the problem?

Cold weather kills batteries. I've been on snow runs with friends who had HF winches and they pull out their remote, and the battery is dead.

Batteries also have an expiration date which applies like a "shelf life" when not installed in a device. Most devices have some sort of parasitic draw.

Batteries being stored actually prefer cold weather. I keep my remote inside the truck anyway.. which is most likely not cold enough if you’re out driving and need the winch anyway. It takes the small CR quarter size batteries which have an extremely long shelf life anyway. You could carry spares or just use the cord if it happens to die..

Yeah that's why I said having a wired option is a must for me.

Extreme temps in either direction will effect battery performance. In the case of Mr. Miami, he's probably more likely to have the effects of extreme heat than extreme cold.

People don't think about extreme temperatures when they think about California but we have harsh temperatures in both directions. I live where we see 115*(F)+ in the summer and I frequent places that see negative temps in the winter.

We've been on winter recovery jobs when someone's HF remote battery was dead and they had to use the wire. Their winch was rarely used otherwise.

It was this job. Picture was taken (of my wrangler, not his) after the bulldozer cleared the snow. Single digit temps and we were employed to break trail to get some logging guys up to their heavy equipment that was left on Echo Summit during a snow storm.

We actually made it within a mile before the snow got too deep, and then hiked the rest of the way to the bulldozer and used the bulldozer to rescue the jeeps and clear trail. Not pictured was a brand new excavator on tracks. I guess it was pretty important equipment and they needed it bad enough to pay us to get them there.
