Has anyone else looked at doing in-bed seating with a more robust family cage over the bed? With a family of 8 I'm trying to figure out a reasonable way to get some more seating capacity that's legal and reasonably safe for around town driving. Something like the Land Rover inward facing seating...

Here's a real rough mock of what I'm thinking.

With my Gladiator still on order, I'm trying to figure out how high the cage would have to be to allow reasonable headroom under the cage. Any one else thought about this or have other ideas to add at least 3 belted seats to the bed?

I don't think that it will be legal in most states. Offroad you may get away with it.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure that out. From what I've researched in NC...
  • Children less than age 16 are prohibited from riding in open beds of pickup trucks or other open cargo area without permanent overhead restraining construction.
  • With an exception if the child is secured or restrained by seat belt in compliance with FMVSS 208 installed to support load of 5,000 lbs. for each belt and of a type approved by the Commissioner.
So I'm thinking with the cage I address the first and with seat belts I address the second. So I might be covered from a legal perspective.
